Major rear fender crack 9 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I've had a crack growing for a couple years and finally took the fender off and found the sub-frame where the two tabs hold it to the fender have completely split.
(I've included a picture, but not sure if it will work)

I'm repairing the fender, but can I take this sub-frame to a welder and have him weld a new plate to replace the tabs?

Thanks for any advice.

Shouldn't be any problem to have the subframe welded up. You might even reinforce it some way while it is apart. Good luck with it.

Let me see if the re-sized picture is acceptable.

If you look through this thread, you'll find some repairs and reinforcements that Curt did to the subframe.

Turns out, my subframe was fine, but not the fender.

I just repaired mine last weekend. JB-weld and pop rivets. Took some finagling but i got it done. Depending on where hte crack is and how bad, you can probably get away with some support bars at the bottom, not all the way around hte crack, with rivets, to stop the shaking and prevent it from cracking more.

Just repaired the rear fender over the past two evenings. Fiberglassed the inside area and took the sub frame to a welder - 40 bucks. He welded a small piece onto the support brace between the two tabs

Thanks blue star, and I considered your suggestion on having the welder add some additional support UNTIL I saw how crazy strong that fiberglass is. Between that and fixing the subframe back to its original design, that thing is rock solid with absolutely no more flex whatsoever.

Yep, that fiberglass probably makes a world of difference.
