Replacing Exhaust and Bleeding Rear Brake? 9 Months ago
Just so you know I'd rather sound stupid than make an expensive mistake. I've had my R* 1700 for a couple of years but aside from adding chrome I've never done any of the bigger jobs. I want to change that. Starting with the exhaust. I'm about to put on V&H Longshots. It (the instructions) appears to be fairly straightforward. The only thing that caught my eye (and raised an eyebrow) was bleeding the rear brake (brake system must be bled or brake will not operate correctly). Again this seems pretty straight forward but are there any things I need to watch out for. I've looked for tech articles about this but have found none. Any advice would be appreciated.

What has putting the pipes on got to do with the breaks? Do they have you taking any break components apart?

They say to remove brake hose banjo bolt from rear caliper and slide hose out of loop in bracket.
Sound right to you?

Not really but I don't have VH Longshot pipe so maybe some with them will chime up soon. I would wait for some one that has them to say something. Congrats on the new pipes!

Thanks. Looking forward to getting them on and getting out in a couple of weeks. Still waiting for the last of the snow to disappear.

I can't remember what i did when I installed mine. I know I didn't take the line loose. Seems like I might have worked around it somehow. Also did not take the floorboard loose either as the allen head socket broke in the bolt. It is still in there!!!(how do you get those out?) Just fished the pipe through the tight spot. Love the sound, hope you do too.

Use a dremel or hacksaw and just cut the loop of metal off the stock muffler bracket. Saves the bleed job and really won't hurt the old bracket.

At least that 's what I did when I changed out my pipes.

Alot of folks have trouble with those bolts .....I had to take my dremel and cut a slot to fit my chisel into and beat it loose with a mini sledge hammer ....of course by then it was a great stress reliever... .....Coug

Just cut the loop at the top and you can leave your brake line in place. The floor board bolts are a bear. I have to heat mine and use a impact driver to get them loose. I replaced my OEM bolts with a larger headed one so it wouldnt strip so easily. 8MM I believe.

The other guys have said it right. Cut the strap on the original part. As the operator of a repair shop that is what I would if you brought it to my shop and asked me to make the installation for you. And since I didn't do it I wouldn't charge you for brake bleeding either.
