#68919 Raider (User) Fresh Boarder Posts: 43 transfer case fluid 8 Months, 2 Weeks ago   Ok, I know this topic has been discussed and I have looked through some threads about it, but today I changed my transfer case oil. And the manual recommends SEA 80 API GL-4 hypoid gear oil. I looked everywhere for this stuff. The closest thing I found was a 80w-90 non synthetic made by a company called Coastal at a local store called VIP autoparts. I wanted to use either Mobil 1 or Amsoil synthetic after reading all the info on the site. What I ended up with was Mobil 1 75w-90 GL-5. I did read here on the site that someone used this same gear oil and that GL-5 is ok to use. Does anyone have any idea about this stuff? Same thing I put in mine at the first change. The Mobile 1 GL5 IS backward compatible with the GL4. I figured they all would be but found that to be incorrect. I did read the link in one of the threads on the site about Mobil 1 GL-5 being compatible for GL-4, and thats why I went ahead and did the change, but I didnt know that they were the only one you can do that with. Good to know. Thanks a lot. Can anyone give a brief explaination or links to sites where I can learn of how oil ratings work. i.e. weights, gl ratings, what they mean and do, etc. I would appreciate it. It's GL5 backwards to GL4. Moderator Posts: 4731 Re:transfer case fluid 8 Months, 2 Weeks ago   There is a small drain plug under the Transfer case. Drain from there. Pull out the large fill plug on the side of the cover and the small bolt just below it. after replacing the drain plug , fill it through the large fill hole till the oil starts to come out the small hole below it. Check/fill it with the bike upright. See owners manual pages 6-13 and 6-14 for more info. The owners manual was one of the few things I DIDN'T get with the bike.....but he's still looking for me.
