Keep at it, mine unscrewed fairly easily. Also, not being a wise guy, make sure you're turning it the right way.

Don't use force - get a bigger hammer!
Seriously; since I am in the business I have a screwdriver special for the purpose. It has a 5/8 wide blade and has had the end ground to a slight curve to fit that slot.
See if you can't find a very large screwdrriver to use to get it loose. After you service put it in with a quarter and in the future you can take it out with a quarter.

I made a large curved screwdriver out of a piece of flat stock, but had to tap on the end to get it to break free and turn, with a wrench. Than it was easy, only tightened by hand when putting it back in.

I took the biggest flat screwdriver I had and turned it using the biggest crescent wrench I had. This was of course after trying to turn it with my drill and a screwdriver bit, and chewing the cap to pieces.

Large washer... good idea! I actually used a circular saw tool that tightens the blade.
