Check those stock air filters!!! 3 Years, 11 Months ago
Big day today for my Rodie...
Started with an oil change... (I'm trying Castrol 20-50 full synthetic.)
Went on to checking all the bolts and nuts and other things that could wiggle themselves loose.
I found the AIS screws and bolts a little more than hand tight... So I pulled it off!
Then I went on to check the condition of the air filter and found the adhesive it was build with, had fallen apart...
When I went to the dealer, the parts guy told me that Yami went as far sending out "revised" parts and part numbers for the change...

Here's the corrected part number:

I changed my air filter about two weeks ago, and mine was like that also. The new cost me @ $37, wow.

I wouldnt give .02 cents for a stock Yami airbox, now that I've seen the difference an 'open' setup makes. For the price of thier filter and another ten dollar bill, I did the Mr. C setup and gained horsepower and milage. .....Yami's restricted pieces of %*%&#@

Mine looked like that too but I wonder if it was caused by the oil getting to it from the vent hose. I've since re-routed the hose so I'll see if the oil was the culprit.

I never found one... so I went with the K&N. Autozone can usually get it overnight for a tad over $50.

Next time... I'll do Mr C's but maybe with an oval.

You're better off with the K&N. It breathes better. And you would spend more money on replacements over time than you will buying the K&N once.

I've been hearing of those stock filters falling apart since I first logged on the clinic nearly three years ago...it's just a known defect, hence Yamaha's "revised part number".

Even if you have a brand new stock filter, DEFINITELY go with the K&N, and then grab your drill & a 1" bit and do a "Poor Man's BAK" job on your stock airbox, as found in the Tech Tips section here at the lovely & talented RSC... You WON'T be sorry!
