I believe it's under the battery. Here is a link to the fiche for a 2001 model: http://webservices.motorsportdealers.com/parts/partImages/YAM/3/02/0082/0041.Gif
It's #32 in the image.

Remove the relay and connect the positive battery post in the red/white terminal in the relay connector with a jumper wire and then connect the negative post to the blue terminal in the relay connector .Put the positive test lead from your test ohm meter to the large large red terminal in the relay and put the negative test lead to the large black terminal . The relay should show continuity if it doesnt replace the relay..good luck Danny..Coug

Ok I'm trying to follow the service manual for the 1602 for the starter relay but the wiring doesn't coinside with my bike. When I unplug the terminal wires to the relay I have 2 large red wires and 1 blue wire and one red with white stripe. Anyone know how to test the relay????

Re:Won't Start? 4 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Ok Cougar I tried to follow what the manual said and it appears as though the starter relay on the right side of the bike is bad. So I ordered one from the dealer(unfortunately). I put the bike back together knowing that I can jump start it from the battery to the starter to get me home today. After putting everything back together for S&G I decided to hit the starter again. She clicks I let off hit the starter again and the bike fires up. I shut her off hit the starter button she fires again. I did it one more time and she worked. I put the seat back on and hope she starts here in a half hour when I get ready to go home. I'm still going with the new relay unless someone out here thinks there could be something else?? Could a starter relay be intermitent???

Re:Won't Start? 4 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I have never experienced a starter relay that goes in and out, however I did have an ignitor that did go down as soon as it got hot and I would wait till it cooled off and ride it back home till I figured out what it was..You never know what an electrical part might do.With that said ...perhaps you cleaned the connectors enough when sliding them in and out to get a good connection.....you might try cleaning all the connections and adding dialectic grease to them and go from there....but it is hot here and pushing my Roadie is the last thing I would want to have to do....good luck with it....Coug
