Re:Cranks but wont start 3 Months, 3 Weeks ago
jdruth--

Same thing happened to my 2004 one night, about 11 pm. Fun.

Anyway, it was my fuel pump relay that toasted. I've since tested the fuel pump and it's fine (and in a box on the shelf). But the night it went out, I was damned if I was gonna be stuck, so I "McGyver'd" the fuel line...bypassed the pump and connected the line into the carb to the line from the petcock with a Bic pen I snapped the ends off of and used it as a connector for the two. Try THAT with EFI...

After some choke and a little cranking, the bike started right up, and I've been running pumpless ever since. I did redo the roadside patchwork and took the pen thingie out, though. I still have it on the workbench to remind me you can overcome just about anything with a little good ol' fashioned thought. Everything except politicians, that is...

Try running a piece of fuel line straight from the tank to the carb and see what happens!

If your not getting spark to the plugs but it still turns over its not the starter diode. It BTW is located directly next to the relay taped up only exposing the small 1/2" square diode. "you'll fing directly under the cover on right side. What might be wrong is the pickup coil. I have a full service manual and could give you readings if you need it. I just finally got my chopper done after all this time and the mystery was solved by adding a Dyno 2000 igniter board in sequence with my factory board, which it bypassed the main board and sent a direct signal to the coils from the pickup coil. A bit complicated to explain but I now have a running and ridable bike...pics to come soon.

You should get spark at the plugs no matter the condition of the plugs or fuel. So start with finding the white 2 prong conecter with a black and grey wire running from the pickup coil located under the cover on left side. U can start by just checking continuity it should go only one direction and dead the other ,,,the ohms are roughly 250 to 275 if its working properly. Then check the dark blue connecter "kickstand switch" and the 2 prong at the clutch handle. Safety switches will allow the bike to turn over but will not allow the circuit to complete to make a spark. For that matter your actual relay may be toast but I doudt it because its still trying to start. PM me if you need a ny specs off the book.

Good Luck

Went back and reread...guess I missed the whole "no fire to the plugs" thing.

Oops...never mind the whole pump thing. But I still recommend pumpless!
