Dead Dash 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
First nice riding day here in a week (golf ball hail yesterday ), and I go out and start her up and start to pull away...and then notice a dead dash.

No speedo, no odo, no fuel gauge. Starts and runs fine, and all lights work, but no instruments at all.

All I did since the last time it worked is changed handlebars, adjusted shock tension, and adjusted PMS. Never went near any of the wiring that should mess with the instruments.

I haven't had a chance to do the volt meter yet (which I SUCK at), but aside from something simple like a burned out instrument cluster, anybody have any ideas off the tops of their heads on what it might be?

Oh, to finish the story, I took my car instead, left my wallet in my bike jacket, got let go from my job and then ran out of gas on the way home (where's Waldo Wallet?)

Happy Monday!

TIA--

RK

RK,

Sounds like a rough day there, buddy.

Could you have by chanced pinched a wire when installing the bars. I would think there would be a fuse for the instrument cluster to check, too.

Rk what a monday sorry about your job.
Other than a fuse, might check the plugs under the dash to see if a connection might be loose.

I checked the plugs under the dash, all good...the fuses I have in the fuse box are horn, ignition, headlight, carb heater and backup. Backup is listed as controlling odometer and gas guage, but the 5A fuse in there is fine. I'm kinda stumped...

Guess it's a search tomorrow. I hate electrical problems...

I would check the voltage at the backup fuse to start and if I had power I would change the fuse even if it looks good which you said it did .The wire that powers your speedo is the Orange and Green wire .Dont know if this helps any but I agree Electrical problems suck. Also if you see Erbman02 in here or on RSR or RSP he seems to know the R* elctrical system as well as anybody I have seen....Good luck RK and sorry to hear about the job ....Coug

I have an 07 r* several times my 10 amp fuse( the last one in line toward the rear of the bike. when it blows it takes out my turnsignals, brake lights, horn and instrument cluster. the running lights still work. I found that one of the wires was bare and occasionally touching the frame. One of the rubber grommets that the wireing goes throught was not installed properly(my fault i had changed to an LED taillight/turnsignal combination).

At least you got all the bad stuff out of the way in one day ... should be clear sailing for the rest of the year.

Good luck.

You know, it's funny you mention that. Sometimes mine does that. Sometimes just the fuel gauge doesn't work and other times the whole thing stops working. If I "lightly tap" (like Thor's Hammer) on the gauge cluster, it usually comes back on. The lights in the cluster still work, just no gauges.
Well, good luck on finding the gnome in the wires.
