My fuel light is flashing and my fuel gauge sweeps all of the way to the right when I turn on the key then it rests on empty. Are these 2 issues related? What is the fix? I di a search of the forum and I have checked the wiring harness on the back side of the tank. Will a new sensor fix both issues?

When you turn on the key it is normal for the fuel gage indicater and speedo indicater to quickly slap to the right then back to the left. The fuel gage should then return to where your fuel level is at.

Sounds like a bad fuel sender. About $70 plus your labor (not a difficult job). Before you go and do that though, disconnect the green wire under your seat by the rear of the tank and clean the inside of it; if there's some corrosion and the contacts don't always contact that could be a problem. Also try disconnecting the battery overnight. I've heard it sometimes fixes this.

If not; a new fuel sender is warranted. You can search the forum for "fuel sender" you should see plenty on it.

I'm about to have to replace my sending unit. The plan is to document with photos and step-by-step directions and submit as a tech article. This unit seems to fail way more often than it should, but thankfully it's a user friendly fix and not all that expensive.

Now I just need to ride all the gas out of my tank so it will be easier to drain...Better go riding now.

I just turned the petcock off. Disconnected the hose from the tank, ran a 5/16" ID fuel line (about 2' to a gas can open the petcock to RES and remove the gas cap off of the gas tank (otherwise it'll stop flowing after a bit). Just need to make sure the gas in your tank is less than the capacity of the can At $3.75/gal, not going to burn off gas.

Its very simple to do. Follow the procedures for removing the tank, after drained, put the gas cap back on (so what little gas is left, doesn't spill). Flip the tank over on a towel. Take a 8mm socket wrench, remove the two bolts holding the sender to the tank. (save the rubber washers, you'll need them). Might want to save the old gasket too indefinetely (long story). Replace the sender in the same way you took off the old one. Make sure you use the washers you saved. Put tank back on bike, reconnect fuel line to petcock, fill'r up and your done. The fuel gauge should work and the light should stop blinking.

My 2000 R* has been doing that since I bought it used. I just lived with it because the reserve
tank saves me.

But recently, I heard something rattling in my tank, it was the fuel float, so I fished it out and have no idea how to reinstall it, but made me think that it may have been lose or stuck in the empty position all that time. You might think about that also.

my bad that's a 10mm socket, not 8. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN as you will crack the gasket Hence why I tell you to save your old gasket.

DrBONESLINGer, the float is part of the fuel sender. Its an odd looking part, part electronic, part toilet bowl accessory.

I got something weird with this system also. It started a month ago. It is just the level gauge. The speedo is reading OK, I think? I have a R* 2002 and 60,000mi

I fill my empty gas tank; the level goes from empty to full. I ride on the highway and the gauge reading is OK. I get stuck in traffic, bumper to bumper, and not even 5 minutes after, the level gauge slowly indicates Empty??

I go out of the traffic, up to speed and the level gage comes back to full or what ever it is to be.

It is the third week now that scenario is repeating itself? High speed 60 mph (or high RPM) level gauge reads fine, at low speed (or RPM) level gage reads empty?

I do city riding at high RPM and the level gauge reads OK.

One tech articles "Replacing your generator stators and your rectifier / regulator" by Randy Fox (Randysgym), it is located in – electrical- stators. This article talks about the generator being over loaded (passing ligths, heated jacket...)and sends weird Voltage to the electrical system and the first to be affected is the level gauge and speedo.
