Bike won't start... the notorious click. 1 Month, 4 Weeks ago
Hi guys. I am having trouble with my bike and its killing me not to ride. I have a 2000 RoadStar and when I try to start her, all I get is a click sound. Not a series of clicks like a dead battery would cause... just a single click. I read that a few others had this problem. I just replaced my battery and I still get the click. Does this mean the problem is my starter relay? could it be something else? please help me get back on the road!

You could try bench testing the starter.

Welcome as well.

Was the new battery charged before putting it into service? They need a least 8 hours on a 1.5 - 2 amp charger. That's a lot of motor to turn over. BB

yeah, the battery was charged over night. All gauges and lights work fine. just clicks once when I push the ignition button.

99 chances out of 100 your problem is the starter relay. It is on the left under the seat behind the side cover. It is a special relay as it incorporates the main fuse and a spare.

To test the starter I just use a jumper cable from the positive battery post to the starter. If it turns over then it is the relay...Coug

used a jumper cable and connected the battery directly to the starter. the bike started right up, so the relay will be replaced. thanks again!
