That's odd that battery cables would allow you to fore go the choke. There is a tech article (I think) about replacing your starter wire with a massive chunk of cable. I'd check that out. Are you using your key to shut off or the emergency shut off on the bars?

first get a voltmeter.... then get a beer.... this is gonna take a few minutes....

step 1... make sure you are in nuetral with kickstand down...key on .....right handlebar kill switch disengaged...

access the starter solonoid wire at the starter....(typical heat related issues are loose wires)
using the voltmeter....check for 12 vdc at the wire when the start switch is engaged (use engine as the ground reference)

if yes but no starter turning......bad starter
if no.......open up the start switch.....should be 12 vdc on one side of switch...push switch...12 vdc at other side of switch??? if yes...get beer....schedule service appointment.......open wallet....
if no....check each safety switch..(ie: clutch, nuetral switch,
kickstand, kill switch)
if the main keyswitch is the problem i would think more vibration/ bumpy road engine sputters would be a symptom.

if using a voltmeter is not an option........ get beer....schedule service appointment.......open wallet....

i thinks its the combo of the two. also i live in so cal and ride everyday. before this i replaced the battery, had the charging system tested and was about to replace the starter when i read the article here about the starter cable. with this combo you get all of the juice to the starter. i still don't know why there is a problem with warm vs cold starting but i don't have to worry about it anymore.

I have a friend with a '65 malibu who had a warm start problem too. the AAA guy came out a got it started by tapping a broom handle on the starter housing. fired right up. AAA guy told him that when hot the magnets don't allow the mechanism to function correctly and knocking on it shakes the internals loose.

Anyway, the cables cost $80. The starter costs $250+.

undo the left side cover. Once that is off, you can unscrew the bolt holding the right side cover on.

Since you used to work for the government, let me draw up some papers, file them, run your request through the proper channels, file them again, do a background check, file that, and snail mail you a letter stamped "denied". Then you can resubmit and we'll run that through another 15 departments, and we'll go from there.
