Re:auto gps on a bike 2 Years, 3 Months ago
i just got back from a 6700 mile road trip on my roadie, and prob 2k of that was in rain. i used my garmin nuvi 650 and with the MS batwin it didn't get wet other then some drops on screen.

What i did for a mount was cut a piece of sheet alum in a T shape.

how i mounted it was i bolted the sheet metal to the upper tree via the 2 bolts holes the and took my suction cup mount i never use, bolted that to the skinny part of the T (which was tall enough to clear triple tree upper handle bar mount). For wiring, all i did was solder a external accessory plug in the headlight buck on the switched 12v wire, used the car charger cable for the garmin and just taped it the accessory plug to make sure it didn't pop out, ran the wire up thru the opening in the back of head light to the mount/cradle. When i stopped somewhere, all i would do it pop it off the mount and put it in my saddle bag since cradle and wire where perm, this made it easy.

It sits dead center above my bar clamp, painted the sheet metal black, and its hard to even see it. 15 min job max.

Re:auto gps on a bike 2 Years, 3 Months ago
Being old and not to bright I 'bit the bullet' and bought a Zumo 550. It sure ain't cheap but it works well. I like being able to use the included software to download routes to the GPS and the Bluetooth connection to my Cardo Scala headset lets me forget about it and it will tell me when it's getting towards time for a turn etc. I've been riding since the mid sixites (told you I'm old)and I don't miss a bit dragging out a map and fighting the wind to read it on the side of the road somewhere. As others have said, it's all personal preference and it sounds like car gps is working well for many. In my case motorcycle gps also works fine in my van. I like being able to leave it turned off and adventuring back roads, and when I want to get back home just turn it on and hit the go home button. I've used Garmin in aircraft I fly for quite a while and I love it up there too.

Thanks for the pics nwebie2009.

Thanks for the link Makcap .... I have the auto backet which fits right on that rail mount. I guess for the price even if it doesn't work it's not big deal .... unless they charge $20 to ship to Canada.
