ohm question 2 Years, 2 Months ago
Tech that looked at my bike thinks I have a pickup coil problem. I checked the ohm reading, and it reads with in range. He says it could still be bad. What do you guys think. I do think I have a fire problem, a couple guys on here think its svs from my video I posted (have a listen to my bike, thread)
But my spark on the front cyl is weak. The rear seems good, but the coil shows good readings as well.

If it is within range and he say's it could still be bad then I guess the test and the specs would be pointless. Tell him to buy and install a new one and if that fixes your problem you'll pay for it. If it don't fix it the part and time is on him. What makes you think you have a weak sprk on the front cylinder? Did you have it on a osilliscope?

No.... it is a visual test only. But it is obviously a VERY weak spark. It is a faint yellow. The back is bright purple. That is with the same brand new iridiam plug.

Did you check the fuses in the plug cap? If you look inside the sparkplug cap you'll see a screw. Remove that screw and you'll find a small fuse in it. They can go bad. I did like Musky and took some #6 copper wire, cut it to the length of the fuse and put it in place of the fuse. Works great.

Whoops accually their resistors and you don't need them because your plugs are already resisters. My bad.

no did not try that yet. They tested in the correct ohm range, so did not consider that as a problem. Will give it a shot though. Whatever at this point, I have had this bike for over a month now, and have got to ride it once for a couple hours.

did you try switching the coils? if the ones to front you say are weak and rear gives good spark. swap em, I know the length of plug wires are going to be different, if using stock colis since the wires are hard wired to coil. and it might be a stretch to get the front to reach the rear heads. you will also need to swap the input wires to the coil as well. but if the weak spark follows now to the rear, then you know it's in that coil, either the coil is bad, or both wires are bad. / did ya try different plugs? are you using a independent shop or a yamaha shop?

You have only one pickup coil for both cylinders. If it is bad it will effect both cylinders.

Re:ohm question 2 Years, 2 Months ago
I did swich the coils. Bike still ran bad on the front cyl. Old Dog is lending me his ignition mod. to see if thats the case. It will be here middle of next week. I will update then.

Also, when tech said my spark was bad, he said it was on all four plugs. I think the rear was stronger then the front. But when switching the coils I found the rear coil had been wired backwards. This being the cyl that is running right, I connected it correctly and it still runs the same.

are you using an independent shop or a Yamaha shop? do you have the service manual? there are 2 diodes that are in ckt, both need to be checked. one of the diodes is in the relay unit, the other is not and is connected in series to the kickstand sw.

No this was a neighbor to some family. He works at a dealership. But I think he is a light tech. He doesn't know as much as I thought he would. Anyway, yes checked the diodes, per the service manual I found on line (paul miner)
