Ignition won't cut off power to system? 1 Year, 11 Months ago
I have an '05 RoadStar, just hit 27K miles. I stopped Saturday to eat lunch, and like I always do, when I can I sit in a spot where I can see the bike. I looked out and my lights were on. But the keys were in my hand. It hasn't given me any indication of a problem.
Was told it could be a relay stuck???? Anyone ever have this happen to you? Thanks for any advice, I know I should take it to a shop, but the closest one to me.... well, I ain't too happy with them, if you know what I mean.

Remove the neg cable from your battery for a minute or so, then tighten it back on and see if anything reset. Sounds like a relay problem to me too.

Lights don't go thru a relay, power to lights is a direct connection thru key switch. 12v goes thru headlight fuse, from fuse red/yellow wire to high/low switch then to lamp. I'm assuming you're talking headlight? I'm looking at schematic now

The starter relay on the left side of the bike is bad. That would be my best guess. When mine went the starter kept going even though the key was off. I didn't pay attention to see if the lights were on, I was too busy trying to get the seat off to remove the battery cable.

the starter keeps going due to the internal contacts sticking even after the coil is de-energized. the coil only gets energized with the key in the on position,

all the lights on are off of 2 circuits, 1 headlight ckt (red/yellow), 2 the rest off the signaling system ckt(brown wire) which both come off the key being turned on. I'm leaning to the key switch, but I've been known to be wrong before too.

Thanks for all the input. It was suggested to me today, that I pull the ignition switch and check it for anything loose. Possible a small screw or two have backed out enough for the on/off switch to not catch on rotation. ?? Anyway, taking it off and checking that out. A new is 276. and tax....
I'll let you know how it turns out, in case anyone else should encounter this problem.

Ride Safe out there... the idiots are in full bloom.

UPDATE! Re:Ignition won't cut off power to system? 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Yesterday I shot a little wd 40 down the keyhole and left the battery and the plug that goes into the "stator"? I guess it is. Anyway, plugged everything in and it works fine now. ???

Now, I'm thinking it was an omen.
I was riding Saturday in a county that I have a job interview in this Friday.

Good sign or bad ??

Are you flipping kidding me? $276.00 for a switch?? If that's true and my switch ever goes bad I will bypass that switch and put in an aftermarket one! That's insane.

Even South Seattle sports wants $191.00 WOW!!!
If it is bad I would check with someone Like Pinwall cycle. They are a used parts dealer on Ebay. They always have R* parts.
