thanks texasscott1,

I checked continuity on the greyish signal wire and it is good so I guess it looks like the next step is to try the dwell tach to see if I'm getting a signal if not is there any way it could be in the trigger circuit or would that affect both cylinders?

If that circuit checks good from pin to pin with no corrosion at either end and you're getting voltage to the other wire then I would say you probably have a problem with the ignitor. There are two separate circuits in the igniter because the cylinders fire at different times. In VERY rare instances a circuit might be able to carry the current generated by an ohm meter but not the normal load of the circuit. You usually find that out if you jumper a wire between the two points and the circuit works.

I doubt it could be the pickup coil, if this is what you mean by trigger circuit, because there is only one coil for both cylinders. You can check the resistance for it though - it should be 248 - 372 ohms.

If there is someone close around that can loan their igniter then that's a good way to test it otherwise the dwell meter will work or even a volt meter hooked between the two wires at the coil might be fast enough to indicate voltage changes at cranking speed.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you.

Thanks again Scott,

I don't know anyone with a R* so I think I might get a dyna3000 from MaxAir.

(I wanted one anyway)

A tip here. If a spark plug has a weak spark, they will have a spark outside of the cylinder but will not spark under compression. I had this problem with my boat motor once. I was skeptical when the mech told me I needed new plugs but it fixed the problem.

Here's the link to Yamaha manuals (including the R*). BTW, the 1700 info is a supplement to the 1600 manual. They are all downloadable too.

Hope you get it figured out.
