stator problems? 7 Months, 1 Week ago
went out to a dead battery yesterday.gave it a jump and she fired right up. took the bike out for a 2 hour ride. came back and she was dead. put it on the trickle charger overnight and she fired right up again. i pulled the positive cable off the battery and she stayed running but made this wicked grinding noise out of the right side. she stayed running the entire time but the noise went away as soon as i reattached the battery....btw the battery is 16 months old......anyone have a clue?

I'd take the battery out and have it load tested at a autoparts store and then go from there.
Just becuase a battery is 16 months old does not mean it's good.
I also noticed you have passing lights on your bike. If the bulbs are higher than 35w then you could also have an issue with your stator not being able to keep up with the demand of those extra wattage bulbs. I had 55's in mine and the stator couldn't keep up at idle.

I also wanted to add that disconnecting a battery like that on modern cars and bikes is not a good idea. I use to do that on my older 50's and 60's cars but after the 70's when more electronic and digital components were added to the ignition systems I stopped. Batteries are needed for the load they provide and just becuase a bike/car runs or don't run after disconnecting does not mean much. You can disconnect a battery on a car/bike and cause serious damage plus if the car/bike dies it could also mean the ECU just needs the load or you just destroyed the ECU. Just a thought

If you have or are familar with a multi meter, get bike running and use meter to see if bike is charging, check volts at idle and check again with some throttle. Should read between 13 and 14.2 volts. Gotta get it fixed before this weekend, you know how your freinds love to start your bike. I'll help you the best I can from here.

I think you might be onto something regarding the running lights. They are like 5x brighter than the headlight and i just recently started running them during long rides during the day for safety reasons.

Ill give a shot and keep my fingers crossed!

Dale see you next weekend? I might be at Bentleys on Friday but will be there for sure on Saturday. Are you sticking around for the Halloween party? Wait till you see my costume! lol

I've seen your headlight, its dim, maybe the driving lights are pulling too much juice for the headlight to work properly. I agree, check the wattage of the bulbs, maybe a nice easy fix. Gonna start a new thread bout Bentleys.

If you have a 1600 the output of the stator is lower than the 1700 version. Use the 1700 one if you find that the output is low

PS Can't wait to see the costume after seeing the outfit you had on at the M&G

I know if I run the high beam and the spots at the same time I blow out fuses and nothing works.....yeah I found that out the hard way!

I know i went out to a dead battery the other day I did run the spots during my 2 our ride which is why...I assume anyways the Battery did not charge. Which of cours makes me wonder why it died in the first place.

I guess if it has to happen now would be the time lol....

Coot.....Ill post pictures here just for you. I bet one person in particular here likes my costume more than anybody! lol
