Starter Problem - Tracked to Relay Unit (w/diode) 5 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Used the service manual to track a starting problem. Hit the button and nothing. Battery tested good and when you cross the poles on the starter it turns over. Used the service manual and the relay unit on the right side of the bike failed the diagnostic test, bad diode. Tried to order the new box from Yamaha and it is almost 6 weeks later with no projected arrival date. I read a small post on another site about using a Radio Shack diode to bypass the one in the "little" black box. Any advice on how to bypass the bad diode?

replace the cheap fuses that come in the new relay with some high quality one from an electic supply house. also replace your battery cables this will get more juice to the starter faster so the relay will not heat up and go bad

Diode is separate from the starter relay.

I think I am having the same problem. What is the name of the part you needed? I see you wrote black box with diod. Is that one of the black boxes on the right side under the side covers beneath the seat. If so the front box or rear box. thanks

Ok scratch that last post just went and looked at it and ones for the turn single. So the other is the box with diod in it and that was the bad part, right? Disguard questions. Item 16. Sorry I'm a little slow...

Sorry for the late reply. Item 16 appears to be a separate diode. The part I need is item 38. It is a relay unit with another diode inside. I followed the testing via the flow chart in the service manual and got no continuity which is a fail, or bad diode.
