Volt Meter 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I have the Kuryakyn LED Battery Gauge installed on my bike. Love the functionality but the lights are a bit distracting especially in low light/night riding. I was wondering if splicing in a switch to cut power to the unit would affect the performance and give me false readings.

Putting a switch in the hot wire to the gauge won't do anything to the motorcycle it will just shut the thing off like any other accessory.

Mine dim's when it gets dark. scotch tape a piece of tint inside the cover and snap it back on then you won't have to cut any wires.

switch won't work unless you want to turn it off and on. If you put a pot to adj voltage then it will throw the leds off as well and you won't get a good reading. I have the same one and it has an auto dimmer for night riding.

If it's that much of a hassle you could always go the analog dial route and swap it out. I have a Motosens voltmeter. They are very nice and no flashing disco lights!

I also forgot to mention if you got the stock stator then your voltage/amp might be close to being maxed out which will cause two green LEDs to light up plus the second green LED will constantly be flashing. That was happening to my 2001 and it did drive me crazy with the constant green LED flashing. I installed the OEM 2005 stator and reg and the flashy flash went away. Kind of expensive to get rid of a green flashing LED but it did

Well, if you want to be creative and are good mechanically and can solder. If there is enough room in the case, might want to consider a micro push button on/off switch. Drill into the case for the switch.

something like this:

Re:Volt Meter 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I have this but not sure the best way to hook it up. I only want it on when the key (engine) is on. Not too smart when it comes to this. Instructions say to hook to any power source...DUH, even I know that.
Hooked 1 to positive and 1 to neg and it's on full time, even with key off. Went into the headlight bucket (what a fustercluck).

Don't mean to highjack this thread, but any advice?

I have one on my old Shadow. The easiest way I could find to hook it up is to supply the power to the unit from the tail light running light wire. That way it's on only when the ignition is. Just make sure you get the running light circuit and not the brake light circuit. Find a good ground for the negative side and you're set.
