Best Wire Crimpers? 1 Year, 1 Month ago
|
|
Okay, guys. I'm venturing out into uncharted waters again. This time it's to find a pair of wire crimpers that are versatile enough to handle just about every electrical wiring issue on my R*.
Looking for best value, ease of use, efficiency and versatility for the R*.
All suggestions appreciated.

Your better off getting a solder gun solder and shrink tubing. As far as crimpers IMO there is nothing special about them just make sure they have a wire cutter on them and a crimping end. I have a pair that even has a threaded section that will cut and fix threads on small screws like the ones that hold household switches to the elec box on the wall.

+1 on the soldering. As far as crimpers go there are so many brands/types out there it would be next to impossible to recommed anything specific, but what davej says holds true. Get something that does it all. As far as brand names I have always used Klein brand electrical tools. Been doing this struff (electrical) for over 20 years now and Klein is the best IMHO. When it comes to tools ya get what ya pay for.

I've bought a few crimpers in my day and they are all pretty much crap
I usually end up using a knife to cut the outer plastic off the wire and a pair of plyers or needle-nose to crimp Scissors make good wire cutters
I've just used a lighter to melt off the wire rather than using a stripper.
davej and fastjohnny, I appreciate the input! I'll check out some Klein tools and see what I find.
If worse comes to worst, I'll just continue the greenpus method.

If you plan on soldering, don't melt off the insulation. That will leave a residue. You need a clean wire for a good bond. They do make crimp connectors with shrink tubing built in. X2 on the Klein's.

Thanks, Mudslide. Wasn't aware of that.

I have had any number of crimpers the cheap ones that do all is junk. Spend the money and buy a GOOD set with a good anvil to make a tight crimp. I solder a lot of my connection and use heat shrink and have a nice $14 heat gun. I also solder a wire to make it hard and stiff before I crimp it to make a nice tight connection. Take your time and do it right and you won't have a problem. But then I am an anal nit picker about things I do anyway.
Curt, appreciate your input on this, and I also appreciate your attention to detail. That characteristic has saved me a few times already and resolved some issues on my Road Star.
The hunt will begin this week for a "GOOD set". One question: What range of wire gauges would all be covered on the R*?
