connecting radio help 1 Year, 1 Month ago
I'm in the process of putting on my reckless fairing. How did everyone hook up their radio, I mean did you hook up both accessory wire and the hot wire straight to the battery or did you hook the acc. wire to somewhere that when you turn on the the ignition it gives power to the radio? thanks for you input and help.

I think it would depend on the amplifier if the specs show it draws a measurable mount of amperage beyond what your stator can comfortably handle OR the wiring you are using. I sell off load harnesses only for the fusing issue and where that current may be tapped. A good harness can save you your main wiring if something does go "short".

Check out this link for good calculations .

I have a relay that is controlled by the ignition switch that powers the radio acc circuit and also powers a power outlet on my fairing to charge my phone or gps with.

moondog,
Where did you tap into the circuit for the relay?

I'm in the same position as sctnmart. I just got my reckless in on Friday. I was going to install it over the weekend but wasn't sure about the wiring. I've installed radios in cars, but I have never dealt with motorcycle wiring. There are 3 wires for the unit. One is power one is ground, and the last says for ignition. Can the ignition wire go straight to the battery with the power wire? I would think that could drain the battery. Where would you connect it to the ignition wire? Any help would be great.

One positive is to battery so to keep memory of stations, clock too. The other power you should use a relay and not to any existing fused circuit since a high output wattage powered radio or amp can pull a lot of current and over load a circuit. Anything added high current should be used with a relay and it's own fused circuit.

You can use the blue wire to power the relay. You can find the blue wire in the headlight bucket and or under the seat. This wire controls the front running lights and the rear running light also. Since this wire only gets power when the key is in the on position, it's perfect to power the relay with since the relay will not use much current and not overload the existing circuit fuse.

There are some radios out there that do not need a constant power source to retain memory and clock. I use a Jensen Marine radio and is such.

Any 4 terminal relay from radio shack or an auto parts store will work. If you tell them what you are doing they will get you one. They also offer a pigtail for the relay if you don't want to build your own. I am not sure which wire I tapped into any more. It is under the left side cover and I ran that wire and a wire from the battery positive and a wire from the battery negative up the back bone to a 4 wire trailer plug at the steering neck so I have a quick and easy was to unhook the wiring for fairing removal if needed.

Auto parts store, either a 30amp or 40amp they usually carry. 4 post or 5 post. on a 5 post, just don't use the center one

I used an ignition powered relay to supply power to aux fuse block that I mounted under the fairing. That put plenty of extra power availability for any future add ons. (power outlet, tach, etc)
