there's only 4 lamps for the speedo backlight, The other sockets are a different color, speedo ones should be brown, if not mistaken. Been a while since I've been in it. I believe as well since they are a different size. the 4 are a T3 if not mistaken and the others a T3.4, industry standards.

Well, I picked through this thing like I was defusing an IED. The unknown scares the beegezzus out of me.

No need for a video of this, even though I had planned to do one. It's pretty simple, just as Curt and Erbman told me.

Once I took the odometer off the bike, brought it inside, turned it upside down on some shop rags, it was just a matter of taking out screws.

First, the five screws that mount the rear of the housing to the odometer itself. I took out four at first because I really didn't know my desitination. So the four corner screws and the middle fifth screw come out.

Second, there's a little plate that secures the wiring to the circuit board -- and when I saw the circuit board I was worried about static electricity. But it was too late to worry. Everything was already unscrewed, and the circuit board was staring at me.

Four brown plastic housings hold the bulbs around the odometer and three similar brown housings hold the three indicator lights (high beam, turn signals, neutral). Just a quarter turn of each one and little slight prying, and they come right out. Only one was burnt out, so I'll be saving them all as spares.

I had the OEM bulbs that I ordered from CheapCycle Parts.com, and the four Radio Shack bulbs. My eyes aren't so good -- even with the bifocals -- so I chickened out and used the OEM bulbs that were already mounted in housings. The four Radio Shack bulbs will be spares, and I'll be looking for a jeweler's magnifying glass when I have to install them. I couldn't figure out how the wires were wrapped around the brown plastic housing, so I didn't want to ruin things.

Put the new bulbs in the back of the circuit board, put the odometer back together, and reinstalled it on the R*. Before reattaching the wire harnesses, I cleaned the contacts real well with an electronic contact cleaner, fan-dried them, and then packed them both with dielectric grease.

All lights A-OK and working!

Thanks Erb and Curt for the PMs and emails. They helped quite a bit! Another success story on the Road Star Clinic!

NOTE: As Erb said, no need to mess with the needles on the front. The lamps screw in from the BACK of the circuit board. They look like seven brown plastic raised screws. The bulbs fit inside the brown plastic housing and the wires wrap through and around the housing.

Running down the road your charging is putting out about 14 volts. I haven't heard how long the Radio Shack 12v bulbs are lasting.

4 years so far on mine.
