I wouldn't use anything over 2 amps. I've heard it will cook a battery if you charge to fast. I don't have much to back it up other than it's what I always heard.

I had a problem with mine this last Saturday. I have a car charger that is a 6amp or a 2amp. I connected it using the 6amp for a few minutes then cranked it up and took the charger off and rode it for a while and all is good. When I got home I put my 1.5 amp maintainer on that I should have had on it all along.

I killed mine same way, about 4 years old also, put the car charger on it all night and started just fine and no problems sense then. Runs fine, just like always, but I'm waiting for the day when she just doesn't want to start again. 18000 miles on her as well.

I killed my SV's original battery when it was 4 years old. Put it on the Battery Tender Jr. for 24 hours, and it was fully recovered. AGM Battery. Stock battery lasted 7 years total. Will never buy another flooded cell battery for a bike.
