Ride up and shut down, wouldn't restart 11 Months, 1 Week ago
|
|
|
I stopped at a buddies after going to town, shut down, looked at his HD, got on it to leave and no start. All it did was grunt, I let it set for just a few minutes and it restarted. I have ordered the flame wires from maxair, but they are not here yet.
My batt is fairly new, it had 12.5 volts setting there but wouldn't start. It dropped down to 7.8 when I tried to start it.
What does every one think, Battery, starter, or the cables. I guess it could be the starter relay also. Please let me where to start trouble shooting this issue.

OK, more trouble shooting! Got the book out and performed the checks as directed.
1st - checked battery voltage at the battery, less than stated in the manual 14V at 1000 rpm/ min - I got 12.8V.
2nd - checked the resistance of the stator, supposed to be .45 to .55 omhs resistance. I got .70 omhs, depending on the meter setting it would show 0 omhs or .70 on the 20K scale.
Does this mean that the stator is bad? If I have a bad stator, could I just go ahead and put the 05 up stator and rectifier/regulator on it. If so, how much better does that improve the charging system?
Please tell me the best way to go!!

Really should do the AC test on the stator, it will tell ya more.
And yes, and extra 8amps to use is great to have with the upgrade.

If a fully charged battery drops below 9v (checked at the battery terminals) when you put a load on the battery(like trying to start the bike) the battery is bad. It has a shorted cell. You will not have 14v on a fully charged battery at rest. If you have 14v you are reading a surface charge that will subside shortly after turning off the bike and return to something closer to 12.6v

To follow up my other posts
I pulled the batt and took it in and had it checked. I have an Interstate Battery wholesaler close that will sell to the public, any way they checked the batt and said it was good but needed a charge. The batt has a build code of 01-2011 on it so I bought a new batt any way. I put the new batt in and now it's charging 14.16 at around 1k rpm, turned on my driving spots and the voltage drops to 12.5 at idle and around 2k it is at 13.3.
I guess I am good to go for now.
Thanks erbman, greenpus and davej for the support!
edit: I also changed out my spots to 50w bulbs instead of the 75 watters.

Sounds like that extra wattage was eating up some of your output, and keeping you from getting a good voltage in lower RPM. I'll preach a little here. Get a Battery Tender, or other smart charger, and keep your battery topped out. The heavier cables will help with the charging. Are you getting a 310 CCA battery? That helps a good bit with the old system as well.

Helps a lot. You should be in good shape with the bigger cables and the better battery.
