After midnight on my side of the world. I just got in, and as Tug would say, I was showing off, but no pics to share tonight.

Now on to the issue at hand. I will be awake when the sun comes up to try this innovation!

BruceMill, StarSergeant and evillaleon, thank you! We needed a new set of eyes and hands on this issue, and you have orchestrated what looks like a great fix!

After reading all these results, it looks like the motor powering the needles isn't strong enough over time to keep providing the sweep and prevents the needles from doing their thing.

I had noticed when I was changing the bulbs and later after doing the voltage tests that the needles felt like they were "locked onto" their stop posts. Looks like the tape is solving that issue.

I'm fired up!

I cut a small piece of spray can straw, and put it over the stop needle. Red too to give some color to the speedo. lol

I never thought of that I was just working with what I had close at hand.
When did you do this, were you just adding color or were you trying to resolve another issue?

** UPDATE **

Used some alcohol and Q-tips on the needles first. Lots of grayish black grime came off of them. Went through 4 Q-tips wet on one side and dry on the other.

Second, hit the posts, but got no similar grime off of them. One Q-tip did the trick for both.

Third, borrowed Neil's idea with the spray can straw. Put one on both the speedo and the fuel posts.

Turned the key. Presto! Needle sweep!

Takes alternating key-turns to get the fuel guage to rest where it belongs. On first turn, got a sweep and then it rests beyond FULL. Turn off the key and turn again, and the needle sweeps and then rests at 3/4 full -- which is accurate.

I'll run it today into town for lunch and see what occurs and report back.

Thanks again to BruceMill, StarSergeant and evillaleon for what looks like a great fix!

Thanks, Tug and jd750ace!

Speedometer is 100%. It works properly now. No longer getting half-speed readings or no speed readings. Plus, the needle sweeps every time without fail.

Fuel gauge is better -- and better than it was before -- but not working as well as the speedometer. I get a sweep every time. Sometimes after the sweep it pegs to FULL and never moves or it moves to the accuate location on the fuel guage. It also showed progress toward empty as the day wore on and fuel was consumed.

Most of the time, if I turn the key on the first time, it pegs to FULL. If I turn the key off and turn on again, the guage will settle where it is supposed to be. This double-turn is duplicated almost every single time. Who knows? It might settle down over time and register just as well as the speedometer.

Bottom line: I'm pleased with the overall result!

Thanks again to those who pioneered the troubleshooting resolution (BruceMill, StarSergeant and evillaleon) and to the well-wishers who have labored through this with me with their contributions toward a fix! jd750ace, you came to my rescue early on, and I appreciate it!

Yet another success story on the Road Star Clinic, and it looks like it will benefit quite a few members!

Yes, but a much different "happy ending" than we usually experience in The Land of Smiles! But I'll take it!

Thanks, blue star!

I'm glad that your speedo is working now. I personally could live without a fuel gauge as long as I have the odometer and trip meter working but not having a speedometer was gonna get me into trouble.
