To the contrary, jd. I have learned quite a bit from you, not only in this thread but others that I've read as a non-participant. Your experience and knowledge has been extremely helpful -- even if I have reached a dead end -- because I have learned something new about my Road Star.
Thanks again!

Well, my dad always told me there's no shame in ignorance, but stupid goes to the bone!
If ya don't know any better, ya never will unless you ask. I've been a mechanic/repair man my whole life, and I learn stuff every day from folks that I work with, and people here. We all walk different paths and gain varying degrees of wisdom along the way, and a range of knowledge far too wide for any one person. I'm not ashamed when I am corrected or otherwise reinformed here, or at work. I speak to the best of my experience, which may not be as great as others. Many here have a much better capacity for expressing the technical word, but I always take the opportunity to share what I know to try to help others along. I can't "live" my bike day in and day out, and I don't know it from stem to stern, but I'm working on it!

I think my celebration was premature. My bike was rained on last night and this morning when getting on it for a 200+ mile ride home the speedo was acting out again. I had to rap on the speedo glass which had condensation inside it to get the needle to sweep. Again as I was pulling away from traffic lights I would have to rap on it to get it to register. I was at a loss for a cure and it seems the patch has now failed
Sorry to hear about that, Sarge.
Fortunately for me, mine is still doing well. It'll be hit with rain at some point. It's rainy season here, so we'll see if mine holds up.
The whole thing might just be a "grime and moisture" issue.

*** UPDATE ***
I mentioned before that my fuel gauge is keeping a pretty close to accurate reading now, but I've noticed that no matter how hard I wish for it to happen, when I turn the key off after stopping. The fuel gauge needles goes to 'E' and then rests just to the left of half a tank.
I've turned the key on again, watched the sweep, watched the needle settle at 'E', and then after a few seconds, slowly rises to just to the left of half a tank.
When I turn the key back on and start the bike after the needle settles to the 'E', I get an accurate fuel level again. So, I'm making it work.
I'm thinking about placing a small length of red straw over the 'F' post to see if that will send the needle back to 'E' in the off position. Who knows? We never thought the other stuff would work either.

Everything else is still working great. Still very pleased.

Thanks, SS! Let us know!
This evening, I tanked up with gas, and once again the needle registered accurately "full" when I restarted. Also got hit with a downpour of rain tonight, but that didn't affect it.
In the morning, I may try the red straw trick on the "full" needle.
