After being on the charger until its fully charged, and then letting it rest for a while, it should read between 12.3 and 12.8 volts. If its bad, where you'll notice it, is when you crank it. If its bad, the voltage will drop way down(below 9 volts I'm pretty sure, this is from memory)and it won't start. If you take it to O'reilly's or such they can put it on a tester that will diagnose a bad cell, etc..

I don't know all the accessories that you have on your bike but up until 2005 the charging systems were weak. I chanced mine out a couple of years ago to an '05 stator & reg/rec.

Theres a tech article on how to test the charge system. You can by-pass all the resistance reading tests and go right to the AC testing (stator). of course you have to have a known good battery to start with. if the AC tests all check out, but you are not getting the approx 14v at the battery at approx 2k rpm, then the rec/reg is bad. Stator produces the AC voltage that goes to rectifier, converts it to a DC voltage, then the regulator drops the voltage to a working voltage to charge the battery.

I would definately load test the battery after a good charge. This will rule out a dead or week cell that may otherwise sneak by. Then as others said check the charging system.

After getting home yesterday, I unplugged the battery and let it rest for about an hour before trying to crank it. It cranked like a champ, good as new. I rode it about 25 miles then had to park it due to other stuff going on yesterday but I did manage to find time to crank it periodically and it is still working better than I could have asked. Thanks for the help.

I hope you have it on a trickle charger because cranking periodically and not riding/charging will kill your battery. Just saying...

It was plugged into my trickle charger a few days ago (when I realized the battery was dead). The problem is that my wife unplugged the trickle charger AND I forgot to turn off my stereo. That is the reason why the battery went dead. But yes, I keep it on a trickle charger every thrid day (when I am home from work).

+1 These bike don't charge very much if at all, just idling. They use a lot of power to crank the motor. If your riding around with your brights on(for safety) and running the radio, and have an early 99-03 bike, with the smaller output charging system, you may not be topping off the battery enough on short trips....just something to be aware of.
I'm glad it's nothing more serious then a battery that was run down.

If I did ever upgrade the charging system would I be required to do both stator AND rectifier, or just one or the other?
