Engine Performance 3 Years, 11 Months ago
Hello to all, I am new to submit to the forum but I have read many forums from this website. Many of you have a great deal of experience and good advice. I am having a problem with my 02 Roadstar and I am looking for some help. My bike starts and runs fine on a cold start up with the choke pulled all the way out. But once I reach the first stop light from my house (which is about 1 1/2 miles away) you can hear the engine making a funny noise. It sounds like an old steam engine running; puffs of air exiting the exhaust minus the smoke. If the choke is pulled out the bike continues to run but with the choke in the bike will stall out. Once the bike warms up I can push the choke in and it won't stall out. Most of the noise goes away when warm but it is still there just softer. I can ride it about 30 to 40 minutes and shut it off for 5 to 10 minutes and restart it and the noise comes right back. The forward cylinder (#2) is my culprit. Before I get into that let me tell you about the mods on the bike. It has true dual exhaust made by Bub and they are short pipes (I did not install these pipes, the previous owner did, they are loud and give no back pressure for low in torque). It has a hypercharger and a K&N air filter. Everything else as far as the engine goes is stock. The first time I noticed the noise was after a good long ride, I stopped into a store and when I came back out after 15-20 minutes and drove off that's when I heard it. I had done nothing to the bike in a long, long time, so I know it is not a problem I put into it. It has been like this for about 7 months now and is starting to irritate me. I have heard many of you guys talking about SVS and I don't think this is the problem and I will explain why: When I change the oil I put roughly 3.75 quarts in and do the suggested road test and steps required by Yamaha for checking the level so I know it is not a overfilling issue. I have replaced the plugs, adjusted the valves, and rejetted the carb (let me tell you, adjusting the carb helped out for some extra power but didn't fix the noise). I swapped the coils to see if the problem followed to cylinder 1 but it didn't. I have done a compression test on both cylinders and after 5 seconds of cranking both cylinders produce 90 PSI. I also performed a cylinder leak test and neither leaked down at all. Both coils ohm out at 1.7 and I know they should be around 1.5 ohms but I don't think this is the problem either. When the bike is running at idle I can remove both plug wires from the forward cylinder and there is a definite rpm drop, but when the plug wires are removed from the rear cylinder (with the forward plug wires plugged in) the bike shuts off immediately. When inspecting the plugs at the rear cylinder they are nice and tan but the forward cylinder is black with soot (they are dry) it seems to me like a weak combustion. I feel the ignition module is to blame for my problem, making a weak spark. If anybody has some advice for me before I replace the module, I would appreciate it.
