Fuel Gauge Malfunction 7 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Last summer I took a slug of water. The local shop removed the tank from my Roadie, turned it over and shook the bejesus out of it to get the water out. My fuel gauge has not worked since even though I have taken it back and paid three times for them to fix it. Gauge stays around 1/2 tank all the time. Shop proved the gauge head works, and they can manually change the resistence and cause the needle to function. The tank sensor has also been replaced.

I don't know what kind of float assembly is in the tank, but think therein lies the problem in that it was probably knocked out of adjustment when they turned the tank over and shook it.

Any ideas on where to start or how to repair?

Be well, bobhog.

I think you're right on with the float BobHog. If the shop shook the tank, the float could have been seriously damaged. Idiots. I would remove the float (it's pretty easy) and check it's movement, etc. See if the arm looks bent (I don't have a pic of a good float arm - sorry). You may wind up having to get a new float assembly. Someone more knowledgeable might have a different idea.
