Plugs & wires, etc. 7 Months, 1 Week ago
|

I'm changing out my plugs with the NKG Iridiums. I'd like to change the wires as well but don't know if that is possible on the RS. If not, is there a decent (less expensive) option other than the Dyna?

the wires are molded into the coils, so to the best of my knowledge, they cannot be replaced.. nemesis makes some coils and wires for the roadie as well.. check the tech section on the home page I believe there is an article there for doing the change over...

educate the noob here.....what good is gained from changing out the wires w/ the plugs? reason I ask is that I need to change out my plugs and I figure if I'll have the tank off then that might be something I should look in to. or should I?

unless you got sparks jumpin all over the place, I wouldn't fool with them..it's not cheap changing out coils and wires..if it aint broke leave it alone...IMHO

I wouldn't change the wires just to change them. If the plugs were in sight and you wanted a specific color wires that would be reason to change them. On our bikes you can't see the plugs or wires so why change them unless necessary. The OEM wires are built into the coils; so to change the wires you have to change the coils also.

Wouldn't hurt to replace the resistors in the plug caps with copper wire though. Won't give you a HP boost but it will be one less thing that can break down. As long as you're running resistor plugs you don't need em anyway.

I've read the article on the Nemesis and Dyna coils numerous times over the last 6 months. If I keep the stock coils and wires, should I wrap the wires to cut down on spark loss? IF so with what? Shrink wrap electrical tubing or tape. Any suggestions?

do you have spark loss? if you don't have sparks jumping from the wires to the frame etc, then you probably don't have a problem.. if you do, then try Musky's fix, as that will reduce the resistance in the wires and help it to get to the plug instead of the frame...

I'VE READ OF RARE CASES OF EARLY R* ?? 99-04 ?? HAVING SPARK LOSS JUMPING TO FRAME OR BOTTOM OF THE TANK . I TOOK A TIP FROM OUR ASSIE PARTNERS AND RAPPED THE COILS AND PULLED THE RESISTERS.
THE RAP I GOT AT LOWES. IT IS HIGH VOLTAGE CABLE RAP. IT'S LIKE REAL THICK ELECTRICAL TAPE ABOUT $6 ROLL AND IT'S THREE TIMES WHAT YOU'LL NEED. YOU RAP IT STICKY SIDE OUT THEN WHEN DONE RAP WITH REGULAR E=TAPE.
THE RESISTERS COME OUT WITH FLAT SCREW DRIVER UP INTO THE PLUG BOOT. RESISTER AND SPRING WILL COME OUT (REUSE THE SPRING). LOWES HAS 6 GUAGE "GROUNDING CABLE" $1 PER FOOT YOU NEED 4 ONE INCH PIECES.
THE WHOLE DEAL DONE FOR $7
