Well, interesting times with the light situation.
I still have not figured out the culprit in the dead passing lamp issue. Meanwhile, I ordered a Kuryankyn Triple Whammy always-on light kit to convert the turn signals to additional tail lights on the bike. As I recall the advert said "installs easily in five minutes." Okay. Maybe that means REINSTALLS easily in five minutes. Seriously, though, no big deal putting this thing on, although the instructions were somewhat lacking. "Plug and play" kind of deal. Take off the amber lens and replace the old bulbs with red ones. Put on new clear lens. Fire it up and see how it works. Like a champ. Okay, I'm a happy camper. Soooo, I put the whole thing back together, load the kiddo up and haul her to karate school for class. After class we come out, fire up the bike and SURPRISE! No headlight. Well that sucks. A assume that somehow my new mod had overtaxed a fuse or something (although I don't think the tail lights are on the headlamp fuse). Turn signals were working like flashers. No tail light. No brake light. And no freaking headlight. Okay, kiddo, I said. It's backroads for us and we have to haul butt and get home before dark.
Well, we made it in just fine. I checked the fuse box and sure enough the headlamp fuse was fried. Replaced it then switched things back on. Surprise. Everything works. EVERYTHING - including the passing lamps.
I try turning the bike off. Letting it set a few minutes, then turning it back on. Everything STILL works. We are in fat city.
Soooooo, I take a break for a little internet fu on some of my personal websites (www.axispowercraps.com and
www.crapsfest.com) then head back out to the garage an hour or so later to tinker on the clutch adjustment again. Just for grins I turn on the key. No passing lamps. Headlight is working fine. Brake lights, turn signals, tail lights, etc. are all working fine. But the freakin' passing lamps are gone again.
Sigh. Well, I tried taking the seat off and wriggling a few wires around. Checked connections here and there. Double checked fuses. Zip. Nada. Nothing. I guess tomorrow I'm just going to start at the head lamp and work my way back until I figure out what the problem is. Has to be a loose or bare wire in there somewhere. Most frustrating.
Now, back on that Triple Whammy thing. Anybody else have one of these rigs? If so, have you had any issues with it drawing too much current and frying circuit breakers? I notice the under-seat unit itself gets fairly hot. Just what I need. One more thing radiating heat up through the seat. Anybody ever tried putting some sort of heat shield under the seat? Inquiring minds and all that.
