Troubles with my speedstar ignition 6 Months, 1 Week ago
Hello all, I have tried to get my speedstar ignition to work now probably ten times. This is my problem... I install it, start it up, my bike runs for about 45 seconds and quits. I checked the fitment in a yamaha catalog and it says it should fit all roadstars 99-07s. Please keep in mind I am only a novice trying to be a mechanic. Can anyone please help me before I have to take it in to the dealer?

Hmmm ... not much can go wrong in plugging it in.

Remove it and put the stock back in and see what happens. If everything is OK then take the Speedstar back.

Thanks for the reply Doc. Everytime I have installed it I have gone back to the stock one and it works just fine. I bought it on ebay from a dealer in Connecticut and they wouldnt take it back because the sticker was scratched from installing it so many times. Bummer. I guess ill just buy a new one. Maybe this time ill go with the dyna so I have the option of setting my limiter. Any good prices on a dyna on the web?

Then is sounds like a bad ignitor.

Does yamaha have a repair or a testing center I could send it to? I mean I would hate to just throw away the $220 it cost me...

I doubt it on both. There doesn't seem to be a test for the ignitor and it's unusual for vendors to take returns on electrical parts.

However, you can try.

CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR FUEL PUMP TURNS ON WITH THE SPEEDSTAR PLUGGED IN. I HAVE ONE SITTING IN THE GARAGE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM BOUGHT THE SAME WAY. YAMAHA DID NOTHING FOR ME. CAN'T TEST IT. YOU COULD TRY GOING PUMPLESS, THATS WHAT I WAS GOING TO DO BUT GOT A DEAL ON A DYNA.

I dont quite understand what your saying. It could work if I leave the pump on? Or...do I remove it?

I think what GunsNGears is saying is that, if the problem is that the fuel pump isn't being turned on by the ignition, eliminate the fuel pump. There's a great step by step article to show you how to do it here. The Suzuki part you need should run you around $40-50. I was going to do it, but the Suzuki dealer where I'm at was going to charge me almost $100 (lovely Canadian dealers).

Gleaning what I have from others on this site, I would try this first to see if it's related to your pump. You stated that your bike runs for about 45 secs and then shuts off. I would try reconnecting your fuel line directly from the petcock to the carb. Now, you won't get enough flow to actually ride the bike, but you should be able to at least TEST to see if you can keep the bike idling. If the bike keeps idling, then you have narrowed the scope of the problem down to fuel delivery.

Then, it's just up to you whether you choose to go pumpless or replace the ignition. I would check around with some other guys on the site about going pumpless though. It seems some have had great success and others haven't. Hope that helps some!
