Ground fault? 5 Years ago  
Background: Got home form a commute-ride last week, and turned off the ignition key, but the lights/speedo/guage stayed on. I can't get anything but the engine to turn ogg now unless I completely disconnect a battery terminal. I am told that I have a ground fault somewhere in the electrical system, but I don't know where to start looking.

First: Does this sound like the right diagnosis?

Second: Where do I start looking to locate and repair the problem?

You got a strange one there, kdlaz1. The lights, speedo, and gauge stay on? That means you still got power to them somehow if the ignition is off. Don't know about a ground fault but I'd be looking at the ignition switch as a possible culprit. Try going through the scenario again and see if the problem repeats itself. Maybe jiggle the key in the ignition also. Also you may have to remove the tank to access the wiring. Check for and pinched, frayed or bent wires. Anything that looks suspicious. Don't rule anything out. Electrical problems can be a real hard one to figure. Good luck!

OK....so I honestly think I've isolated it to the ignition switch. I pulled the side covers, the tank, the cluster off the top of the tank, and the headlight (trying to expose every wiring connector that I can). My dilemma now is HOW DO I REMOVE THE EXISTING SWITCH/STEERING LOCK COMBO?

The part is held in place with what look like alan-key screws, but they seem to have lead plugs hammered into the heads (for security, I'm sure, since that is also the integrated steering lock)

Any advice? I guess I could just drill them out, and then replace with new screws.

Thanks for ANY advice you can give. I tried to post a picture of my bike, but for some reason couldn't format it correctly for this site.

Those are security screws like found in autos. They have heads on them but when you tightened them down they snap off. You can drill them out or sometimes use a chisel to back them out.
If you want to go back with the same type screw and can't find a Yami dealer with them check with a Nissan dealer. They look like the same size we use in late model Nissans.

If you had a "ground fault" you would either have a short (positive to ground) or an open ground.
An open ground could conceivably "back feed" through something else but you would notice a significant decrease in voltage capacity to your lights and dash because those items would be fed in series... Your right on track with checking the ignition switch first...
