Check the cable connections on your battery, making sure they're tight. You could even take them off and clean them first, just in case.

I think Papa has you on a good track. Check those cable connections. If they're good and the problem persists, check the condition of your cables. Is there fraying, acid wear? Any issues of the type, check the resistance of the cable with a meter or just replace them. Often times, if there is an issue with them, when it is a battery cable it will be very hot trying to carry the load. As it heats up, it's resistance will rise and can cause all kinds of problems down line. My two.

guy I work with bought an 05 after I got mine. A couple times for no reason he tries to turn on his bike and there is nothing. No juice at all anywhere. Then suddenly after messing around for a bit it all comes back. Lst time it happened he pulled the seat off to check the connections which were itght) and he had left the key on and boom, he has juice agian. i suggested that some connection isnt making it quite right between the battery and the key switch and he should take them all apart and clean them and make sure they are seated. Any other ideas?

takehikes,

I've seen bad ignition switches as well that make intermittent contact. Usually on older bikes, but switches being what they are, can be bad right from the get-go, too.

And there's too many switches, I think if I ever have a problem like your speaking of, I'm going to remove all the lockout switches I can find.. just venting...

I just had that same problem happen to me as I am riding down the highway and I look down and I have no electrical and sometimes the guages were going nuts and I was hearing some sparking noise near the stator cover on bottom right side near floorboard. Mine is at the Yamaha shop right now, it's under warranty.

I have and 04 Road Star 1700

I checked battery terminals they were thight. But still havent checked all plugins. It acts like a relay or something. It runs and starts fine but when you are riding it just gos dead and quits. No power or nothing until it sets a few minutes with the key off and turn it back on and its fine again

Re:Riding along and electrical system dyes 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Loose conections and corrosion can cause electrical nightmares. My own bike quit on me two blocks from home as I was leaving for work. Pushed it back home (lots of fun). Checked voltage across battery - ZERO. Meter probes were on wire terminals. Moved probes to battery posts and got twelve volts! Tried with + probe on terminal - probe on post: 12 volts.Tried with + probe on post - probe on terminal: nothing. Removed bolt from negative terminal; scraped post and both sides of terminal with knife, reassembled and was back in business.

That was slick and quick, but it is not always like that. Check where the ground wire from the battery hooks to the frame. Check where the positive wire from the battery hooks to the starter relay. At the starter relay is the main fuse, remove & install it several times to scrape the connections. Those connections are "all or nothing" everything works or it doesen't. From there the wire goes to the main switch which is a tripple pole switch; it makes three connections at once and three wires go to different places. After the main switch a problem will not effect everything.

You say that things work when they are cold and quit when it warms up, then works again when it cools off. You may have a connection which works when cold and expansion with heat breaks it, when it cools off it is back in business. Because of that don't just check that the connections are tight! Take them apart and clean them then put back together tight!

Good Luck,
Clifford
