Floorboard Bolts 2 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Has anyone had problems with the bolts holding the floorboards? I tried to install an engine guard yesterday that used the front bolt on the right floorboard. The bolt will not come out. I am at a point now that I am going to have to drill it and use an easy out. Not sure how much luck I will have with that, but don't know any other way to get it out. Does anyone have any ideas that might help?

Yami puts those damn things in with loctite, If you haven't stripped the hex yet, heat it up with a torch and try it..If you have tore it up then the easy out may be your only option... some have cut a slot across them with a dremel and that has worked as well... do a search and you will probably find a good bit of info...good luck

Yamaha uses a proprietary loctite on those and its really strong. I keep a small brazing torch in my toolbox that I use to solder copper pipes. It is a screw on torch tip that screws onto a butane bottle (this is really a handy tool). I use it to heat up the bolts on bikes that have never had their floor boards removed and it softens that loctite up just enough to make them removable.

If you have way to heat them up, it will help.

If you can get the rear bolt out, you can rock the floorboard up (or down) depending on whichever direction it needs to loosen it. You should be able to loosen it enough to get the hex in to hold it, or use a pair of vicegrips attached to the head of the screw. I had this happen on my left side and using the floorboard as a lever worked and I didn't need to drill anything out. I even hit it with heat before I started the whole ordeal of putting my highway bar on, but still couldn't get that one to budge.

Good luck! I know many people have been in the same pinch.

I used a alen head socket wrench with a cheater bar. I thought I broke my arm when that bolt finally did come loose! That is some agressive locktite!

I tried that, too.. but it took the head of the bolt instead.

I put on the same kind of freeway bar and had to use a butane torch on the bolts for about 45 seconds, give or take, before the bolts would move. And they moved easily after that.

wow.... what in the world do they make this locktite out of??? those are really hard bolts, and to have the bolt lose to the locktite is insane!

Re:Floorboard Bolts 2 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Ahhh the floor board mounting bolts. I have fond memories of both times I have tried to remove them. Once to put on the Yamaha small engine guards and the second time to put on my Lindby bar. Both times I wound up drilling the heads off the mushroom cap bolts after stripping out the hex heads. I used heat, impact driver and a lot of bad language. When I put the boards back on I used a bolt with a larger head that now requires an 8mm hex key instead of the 6mm of the former, and is a lot harder. The stock bolt is easy to drill out and you can drill down to the shft of the bolt and the head can easily be chiseled off leaving teh threaded shaft in place. Once the head is off the shaft will come out with fingers, at least it has both times I have done this. Make sure you have a good hardened drill bit as the soft ones you get at Home Depot will get dull very quickly drilling the bolt head. Good luck

Thanks for all your help on this one. I removed the second bolt and was able to move the floorboard a little, but still not enough to get the bolt out. I applied a little heat, then took a small drill bit and drilled into the bolt in preparation for using an easy out. When I got the hole drilled, a combination of the above allowed the bolt to easily turn out without the need for the easy out. Guards are on the bike and look great. Now to tack the exhaust!
