Dude... That's exactly the spot where I have the discoloration on my V&H Longshots, too! I've been working it over with chrome polish and Brasso and a soft rag, and a lot of it is starting to come off... It's definitely ugly, though. I think I will definitely leave my heat shields on!

If the entire pipe looked like that from head to tail, it would look pretty cool......IMHO. But, I wouldn't worry about keeping it clean, just worry about keeping that heat sheild on!

Back in the "olden days" all our pipes looked like that, we didn't have no stinkin heat shields.

My problem is, the discoloration is in a 2" spot in the heat shield, right over that exact same area.

One more question before surgery - you cut six inches off the front? and then just screwed the bolt back in?

Todays the day. Either cut 'em or put them back in.

6" off the side w/o the bolt hole (yes the front). You can always cut more, but that did it for me. Last night, I took off the AIS. Now on decel the bike sounds even better!!!!!

Heat and chrome get that result. If the mixture is set properly the temperature of the exhaust gasses as they leave the cylinder is about 1,400 deg F. There is no way to stop the pipes from discoloring. the cure is to cover the discoloration up with a heatshield.

I have and 05 with the 1700 motor. I bought it in 04 and the
longshots for the 1700 were not out yet. The dealer put on
the ones for the 1600 motor and it sounded great. I took off
the AIS and added an open air kit and it sounded louder and better
I removed the baffles and she sounded even better. Then I went
all out and got the 108 big bore kit and it is amazing how great
this bike sounds. I do get alot of popping on cold wet days.

My buddy has an 06 with the 1700 and the newer longshots and
everything else stock. He pulled out the baffles and it did not
sound good at all. The newer pipes are bigger and with a stock
air box you just don't have enough back pressure for power or sound.

I was going to try the "homemade thundermonster" per http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/98/105/

It says to use 2 1/8" O.D., I measuresd my Longshots and the pipe itself is only 2" I.D.

Am I missing something? I've read the 1600 have a smaller exhaust but mine is a 1700.
