In Minnesota:

169.79 VEHICLE REGISTRATION; DISPLAYING LICENSE PLATES.
Subd. 3.Rear display of single plate.

If the vehicle is a motorcycle, motor scooter, motorized bicycle, motorcycle sidecar, trailer registered at greater than 3,000 pounds gross vehicle weight (GVW), semitrailer, or vehicle displaying a dealer plate, then one license plate must be displayed horizontally with the identifying numbers and letters facing outward from the vehicle and must be mounted in the upright position on the rear of the vehicle.

anyone know the size of the rear axzle.

You can use any HD mount - they normally come with a 3/4" axle adaptor. On our bikes the mount is mounted over the axle bolt, a hole is drilled into our axle and a bolt is used to secure the mount.

the florida law states it must be mounted at the rear of the bike horzontile. that law also gives big fines for pulling the front wheel off the ground and high rates of speed the second and third ticket carry lic. Suspensions
for sport bikes it can not be mounted inside the rear fender well.
Some are pushing it by leaving it mounted down by the rear wheel sproket.
i was at bike week last year and watched 3 cops walk down a row of bikes putting tickets on them i asked what they had done he said plates were mounted wrong and they had given out over 400 of them today alone.

Folks, as an LEO in Orlando (Orange County) let me try to clarify. The three laws that were passed and went into affect October 1, 2008 were geared for street bikes (crotch rockets) but technically apply to all.

Yep. Next time you see one of your local street racin', rocket ridin' punks be sure and tell them thanks. 'Cause they're the reason for it. I truely believe that if these nut jobs aren't stopped, more states are going to follow in Florida's footsteps and we'll all suffer. The AMA has been following this issue closely. Unfortunatley, these a-holes are making their job very hard to do. You all know how the government works.....punish the many for the acts of the few.

Thanks you sirrrrrr! I second your thoughts. The cost of retrofitting my lisence plate is running me about 300.00, thats without the welding that I need to do to retro fit the bracket from Pro One.

Amen!Folks I know in Myrtle Beach said this was the crowd they wanted out but had to include all in their new ordinances. The local ABC affiliate here in Charlotte announced on the news this AM that the town of North Myrtle Beach is mass mailing an invitation to bikers to enjoy bike week in their town.

This is cut and pasted right out of my statute book. 316.2085(3):

(3) The license tag of a motorcycle or moped must be permanently affixed horizontally to the ground and may not be adjusted or capable of being flipped up.

That is all is says.
