Proper Axle Torque and... 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Hello. Hoping my new tire comes in tomorrow so I can get it on and leave with friends to Colorado. I am wondering what ft pds of torque is used for the rear axle as I have heard the Yami suggestion can snap the Bolt. Also looking for the proper belt tension. Thanks.

The book says 110 Ft Lbs but I just tighten mine up good using a 1/2 drive ratchet. Tighten it like you would a lug nut on a wheel. It won't go anywhere. For the belt tension, you check it down at the bottom half way between the front and rear pulleys. You should be able to twist the belt to a 45 degree angle when you get to a point you can't twist it anymore.

My issue with belt tension is this. What if your hands are way stronger or weaker than mine? Any way of telling the actual proper tension? Is there a tool or something?

Thanks!

Yes, there is a tension gauge that can be bought from Yamaha. You push up on the belt with the tension Gauge and read the tension on the gauge. I prefer using my hand. It is irrelevant how strong one is. It is all about feel. We are talking about twisting the belt until the belt resists significantly. Yes you can twist the belt beyond this but it takes much more effort. Where the belt resists twisting to the point it wants to stop twisting is where the tension of the belt is. This should be a 45 degree twist. Besides that, I have used those cheap tension gauges before, and I trust my feel more than I do them.

65 ft lbs is sufficient for the axle bolt.

I bought a belt tension tool a my local HD shop.

I ended up buying a new axle and nut. I threaded the nut on by hand, and then tightened it to the specifications, and ended up stripping the axle. That was $66.00 I could have used for CHROME

I have torqued mine at 110 ft lbs for the last 4 years and it hasn't screwed mine up. What makes you guy think it screws the axle up?
