Re:Shock Adjustment 3 Years, 9 Months ago
In response to the dealer question/comment...yes. Two different dealers. All I get is a blank stare and told there is nothing I can do about the ride height and there is no after market solution they know of. I even asked about tire size and was told no modification can be made and that the floorboard models are not rigged for foot pegs. When I asked about the adjustment of the shock, I was told they are pre-set at the factory for a medium weight rider. Of course I reminded them that there was no tension on the shock when I inspected it and neither offered a solution. One said I could bring it in for their mechanic to inspect but there would likely be a charge.

I have not gone back for more of that. I'm a can do guy so I'll do it my own damn self. With the help of this site of course. Besides that, I reside in a mountainous area and the nearest dealer is 70 miles away.
Not whining. I like it here.

Thanks again for the help and comments.

Mike

Keep in mind Mike that you are talking to sales guys who more than likely have know clue what the difference is between a shock and a carburator!

Mike... you sound like me... I live in Western North Carolina... just south of deals gap... and the closest Yamaha dealer is either in Blue Ridge, Ga (1 to 1.5 hours) or in Waynesville, NC (1.5 to 2 hours)... But, I happen to work at the nearest dealership which happens to be everything but Yamaha, LOL!! I am the service manager there... If they wont adjust your freakin shock for you at no charge, then I would not go back to them!! Especially if that is the dealership you bought the bike at!!! That is just one of those common courtesy things that you do for a customer... even if I have to do some of those type of things myself (which I do!) I amke sure the customer is completely happy with their purchase... even when the warranty runs out, we try to make things right in the customers eyes...

The info that you have received here so far is 100% true... I also live in a very mountainous area and had to do away with the stock spring and upgrade to an aftermarket heavy duty type just to be able to ride 2-up anywhere... then I did upgrade to an air ride for extra height adjustment... either way you decide to go, you will not be sorry... but, you will need to upgrade to one or the other, especially riding 2-up in mountainy conditions... just my .02....

I purchased a Progressive 850lb - 1200lb Spring. Can you put it on a Road* stock shock or do I need another shock? If so, wgat is recommended?
Thanks

yes, you can install it on a stock shock, and that is the most common way to do it...some people buy the progressive shock too, but its over $400 last time I checked...I'd start asking about who can swap the spring for you, as I spent a whole day going around looking for someone with the tools to do it, and ended up at the yammi dealer and paid dearly for 5 minutes of labor.

Thanks gareva1. I Fortunately I have a bud who has a spring compressor and the know how. Can't afford the shock and I wanted to make sure.
Thanks Again!

I had adjusted mine last year fairly tight, but after reading this post I decided to check it, seemed pretty spongy lately. Put it on the jack tonight and found that the adjusting nut and lock nut had loosened almost all the way down to fully loose.
Tightened it all the way to max and took it out for a ride. WOW, what a difference. Looking forward to having the wife on the back and see how much better it feels! Looks like a job for tomorrow!!

I had same problem when new and same problem with it loosening on it's own, you really have to JAM the Jam Nut.

I don't know if anyone is still reading this post but StoneColdStar replied that he added an air system to increase ride height, after first changing the spring . I would be interested to know how that affected his ride when one up. My county has not spent much on roads in the last 100 years and a rough ride could end my relationship with my back and ibuprofin. Maybe others would be interested as well. Perhaps StoneColdStar could enlighten us further. And brand recommendation would be nice too.

The tech article I read on our site was not specific as I recall on solo riding but did mention that two up was better. It sounds like an expensive upgrade and I sure would not want to sorry I did it or have to switch back to stock.

Re:Shock Adjustment 3 Years, 9 Months ago
Well I have changed the spring and had my shock out a few times and re-set it up to the right adjustment going on 22 times now. No matter how hard I jam the jam nut (Way beyond spec torque) it still loosens all on it's own over time. I don't think you can possibly JAM it tight enough. I had the bike up 2 feet high and two very long wrenches and used a sledge! Still loosened up! So I tried Red threadlock, that's a no go. So today we were riding and I got that feel and sure enough it's all loose again. So I adjusted it back up to 2 in and used loc tight again and this time I put JB water Weld on the threads (It can be chipped off with a chisel) Lets see if that works!

Hurry everyone go check your shock and see if your nuts are on the wrong end
