To Spring or Not To Spring 2 Years, 4 Months ago
I have read several threads about the rear spring and hope that those with experience can help me out before I purchase. I have been riding with the rear shock cranked to the max for a while and still occassionally scrape the Cobra Speedster Slashdowns when 2 up. As I understand the stock spring is a 725 pound spring. Barons has a 900 pound spring and Eibach has a 1000 pound spring. Then there are the progressives generally 800 - 1200 pounds. Please bear with me as I ask some hopefully not too stupid questions. I am guessing that from the spring rating I can add an additional 175 pounds of load capacity with the Barons and 275 with the Eibach and an amazing 475 with the progressive. Of course most of these are over the tire's load limit!!! How much do these springs raise the bike if any? I am 210 and ride 2 up about 10% of the time. Scraping is not a big issue as the pipes are already scraped. I just do not want to scrape to the point the rear wheel lifts. With regard to the progressive spring I have heard that the stock shock is not up to this spring and will fail fairly quickly. That is an expensive replacement at $400 plus. Please comment on springs you have used what they did for the scoot. Thanks for the help refining my ride
