To Spring or Not To Spring 2 Years, 4 Months ago
I have read several threads about the rear spring and hope that those with experience can help me out before I purchase. I have been riding with the rear shock cranked to the max for a while and still occassionally scrape the Cobra Speedster Slashdowns when 2 up. As I understand the stock spring is a 725 pound spring. Barons has a 900 pound spring and Eibach has a 1000 pound spring. Then there are the progressives generally 800 - 1200 pounds. Please bear with me as I ask some hopefully not too stupid questions. I am guessing that from the spring rating I can add an additional 175 pounds of load capacity with the Barons and 275 with the Eibach and an amazing 475 with the progressive. Of course most of these are over the tire's load limit!!! How much do these springs raise the bike if any? I am 210 and ride 2 up about 10% of the time. Scraping is not a big issue as the pipes are already scraped. I just do not want to scrape to the point the rear wheel lifts. With regard to the progressive spring I have heard that the stock shock is not up to this spring and will fail fairly quickly. That is an expensive replacement at $400 plus. Please comment on springs you have used what they did for the scoot. Thanks for the help refining my ride

I had the progressive and stock now have air. I like the progressive MS1700 whom is larger than I rides 2 up probable 88 % and has done several trips scaled at 1200 approaching 1300 and seems to be very happy with the stock shock and progressive spring. I do have a shock and spring assembled in classifieds it wouldn't be fair for me to render my opinion without disclosing that. I liked my progressive way better than the stock. I really like my air ride takes a little to dial it in. Satisfied and not going back so that is my thoughts.

Im 210 lbs and ride two up most of the time , pus a fair amount of exra weight when touring . I have the Progressive front and Rear and for quite a while I had problems bottoming out or way too stiff on the rear , couldnt get it right . It would practically put me over the bars after hitting a bump too . I discovered when I changed it out to a Used Warrior Shock the original Roadstar shock had vitrtually no Rebound damping and Im sure it was faulty as others have no problem with that combination . I now have that Warrior shock with the Spring tension as far off as I can get it and the adjustable Rebound damping which the Warrior shock has , at about middle . LOVING it !!

Bob....I had the stock shock/spring for 3 years and just went to air. Like Makcap just said, I would never go back either. Air definitely costs more than a good shock/spring, but the ride is totally different.

I previously had mine lowered using the PCS lowering links and bottomed out all the time. Tightening the shock didn't help much at all in my case. Air has allowed me to ride much lowerer than the PCS allowed while being stiffer than stock. The stiffness is totally adjustable as well.

My original plan was to trade out my spring. Just went crazy and bought the air instead!

....and my goal here isn't to spend your money for you!

Regards....greeny

Thanks for the input. I guess the way to go is a progressive spring.

I ride 2-up alot and neither of us are small, I am 6'3 and about 235lbs and the progressive spring has been great for us since last year when we put it in.

Just concerned a little as I have heard the stock shock cannot take the progressive spring and fails. Don't want a $80 buck spring to kill a $400 shock, but want to ride without grinding away my pipes.

I've got the barons 900, one of the best purchases i've made for my bike but wish I'd bought the eibach 1000. I didn't realize the rear spring is adjustable, if so how and how much cause it raised my bike about 1/2".
