I agree but if you want to run at lower than full height then you have to run at lower pressure which in turns results in the 'bounciness' and poor ride.

Doc

thats where that rebound control knob comes into play... if ya get it set properly, it will cut that "bounciness" and poor ride quality way down if not out... I have not had any issues with that with the Tricky... now, with the Barons, that was a different story... it bounced all over the road... I also have a lot more weight on the rear of my bike too... which may make a difference...

I'm with Curt on the air ride. I've notice a slight instability if yoo're running at partial fill. At first I thought I was imagining things but I've been paying careful attention when I'm riding and at what height.

The most stabile ride occurs when the shock if fully loaded + some. If you ride at half height the ride is soft .. OK for in town but way to mushy and unstable on the highway.

Doc

I agree with you Doc. Most wouldn't ride 1/2 full on the highway. It's way too soft and bouncy. But, that's the way it works and it depends on common sense, right?

The ride characteristics are perfect at a stock ride height for me(120LB +-). Most would be happy at any rebound rate when fully filled. Depends on the weight of the rider(s), bags, trunk, cargo, etc.. Everybody is going to be different in that respect. And, it looks really cool sitting in a parking lot slammed to the ground.

But, riding soft and bouncy in-between doesn't make too much sense unless you're doing a straight, smooth stretch through downtown in front of the ladies...

Tricky isn't here to defend (which he probably would have). Personally, if I lose control of my bike(God help me), I won't be blaming my mods. I chose to do them. And, if I didn't take the time to learn to handle the bike with them on, then it's my fault. Right?

now you guys are making me nervous about making the change, maybe I should consider maybe changing the springs and shocks. I looking to get a smoother ride with a manageable ride.

I believe that you can achieve that with a good air ride setup... and if you ride sensible...

That's what I'm talking about...

sctnmart:
I've had the air ride for two years, not a worry in the world. Still my favorite mod. I'm sure you'll get the same input from everybody else here that has one and knows how to tune it. It's easy...

If you're not into dragging your butt on the highway at 70 MPH, you'll love the ride. You'd have the ability to tune it (with or without a passenger).

Trust me...

I guess I've never run into the bounce issue since I ride either aired up fairly hard, or with no air in it at all. I'm also no canyon carver either.

Don't get me wrong guys I am not blaming the air rid for my crash but it sure had a little bit to do with it. If you read the legal diclaimer Tricky does say that it can alter the handing of the bike some what. It was my fault because I had it set for a confortable smooth highway ride and the roads turn out to pot hole rut special so I should have pulled over and tuned for that. I love the Tricky and will not sell it but I am leaving it on the old bike to ride that way. The bagger I am leaving OEM Yamaha has engineered these bike perfect. I will play with my old one. I am just warning any one that gets one to be CAREFULL and test the settings for different road conditions as I am living proof it does change the bike up. Yes I don't regret getting it and will keep it. Texas roads must suck compaired to other states.

Re:air shock 2 Years ago
Interesting discussion.

Yes, I've come to the conclusion that around town, partial inflate is OK but on the highway it needs to be pumped up.

My problem lies with the raked trees. I have 4 over on the front, which makes the trail close to stock. As I pump up, the back end rises and decreases my trail, in fact, at full pump the back is higher than the front! (when I'm not on the bike) .... not a good scenario for trail. This is probably part of what I'm feeling on the highway whereas you guys don't seem to have that problem.

With a passenger and it overpumped it seems to be much better that when I'm alone .... guess I need to start eating more fatty foods.

Speaking of the rebound valve ... where have you set yours?

Doc....

If I can interject, I have set my rebound at the stiffest possible setting which is around 4 turns out. At that setting even at half full of air, it feels pretty firm. At full air, very firm.

sctnmart: I've been running the Tricky Air setup almost a year now and love it. Read all the posts through in the other threads on Tricky Air as well if you are thinking of going that direction. There is some very good information in previous threads on this topic. Just search for Tricky.
