I disagree with the notion of sacrificing handling for mileage. The hardest tires we can find for Road Stars are more than up to the task of any handling you can do with such little ground clearance. If you install a 71H load rated tire, you will be handling limited, but that would be due to a poor choice of application. a 77H rated rear is all you should be putting on the rear, and 67H minimum on the front, keep them inflated properly, and understand that a long life tire takes longer to break in (350-500 miles) than a softer tire (100-150 miles) and you will be fine. I would highly reccomend the Michelin Commander tires, based on my own experience.

I have metz on front with just over 5k on it and isn't even half worn in. The commander ii that's on the rear has maybe 1k and handles like a dream and shows no wear yet. The michelin commander ii is supposed to top all the other high mile tires. At least that's what the ad said anyway...

I agree about the commander 2 tires, have a little over 450 miles on a set now,and can say they are a upgrade fromm metz 880 that I had on very smooth, quite and responsive
zero sign of wear at this point.

I have metz on mine my front has 14000 miles and still looks almost new Im betting like 8-10000 more miles out of it. The rear how ever had a defect after 7000 miles, it started to peel, the thread was starting to shred off. So I bought another one. The handle is ok. I thought my stock dunlops handled alot better. My next set Im gonna try shrinko or avon. havent decided yet.

I just put my 3rd Avon rear and second front on and the new Cobra from Avon is awesome. I got very good mileage out of the predecessor Avon Venoms, but they were replaced by Avon with the Cobra. I got over 12K on a rear and 21K on a front. They stick great wet or dry, and handle loads like two up with gear with no problems. They are not cheap, but then I like my skin and my bike just the way they are so I do not scrimp on tires.

I'm with CruiserBob on the Venoms. Great tires. I went up a size on the rear tire to the 160 though. Also, I switched to DynaBeads just last week and won't be going back to traditional balance weights again.

I just put a commander II on the rear last week and love the thing. HUGE improvement in handling over the Dunlop that came off. I can't speak to the millage yet but from what I've heard its pretty good. I've also heard great things about the metz but they are higher priced... I'll be buying the Michelin again.

Just put Metz 880 WW on front and rear. Much improved handling.
The white wall goes all the way to the rim bead. Nice
