This is on par with another discussion I have been involved in over the weekend regarding running a "spoolie" front end, rear brake only. It violates federal MVSS, which are LAW. I have more than one insurance policy that will not pay off if I am participating in illegal activity when killed, or dismembered. Knowingly operating a non-conforming vehicle is a good way to not get paid, and if you cause others loss while doing so, kiss the homestead goodbye and get ready for prison. Bottom line.
I know others will think that is a crazy notion, but this country paid a woman 20 million dollars for spilling hot coffee in her lap, and gave a convicted drug dealer and addict (Rodney King) 14 million.
Take your chances with the courts if you will. I have a family to support.
That lady NEVER rrcieved 20 million for spilling coffe in her lap. She got a small pittance just to make her go away. Not even tens of thousands.
Not that any of this really matters when discussing Darkside riding, but the truth of the matter is that nobody really knows how much the McDonald's coffee lady got in the end. The last amounts that were made public totaled $680,000, but both parties entered into a secret settlement. As for our buddy Rodney King, his settlement was $3.9 million.
I've checked with my insurance company and have a written statement from them stating that since this tire is DOT compliant, we're good to go. Put another way, I'm completely covered. You may very well be right, JD750. Your insurance company could leave you out in the cold if you have any non conforming (aka
aftermarket) hardware on your bike. In a case like that, you should be sure to have full documentation that any and ALL parts conform. Just noticed that you have a driver's backrest - did that come stock? How about the engine guard? The guards around your saddlebags? That cover over the rear of your tank didn't come with the bike, did it? A bad insurance company could blame any and all parts for a crash, I guess. On most of our bikes, they could blame the exhaust, grips, pedals, highway pegs, tires, different lower deflectors, etc. etc. etc.
Good luck out there!!!!
