Possible. My chrome arm didn't come with end caps. But the shaft insert is definitely too long. It sticks out about 3/8". Maybe different end caps account for that difference and make it fit??? I looked more at the site where that image is hosted and I see the caps are called Thrust Covers, but there's also a shim. Item #5. I don't think mine had a shim, but I'll look again. If the shims gets me the 1/4" I need, and the thrust cover is deep enough to enclose the shim and still seal to the tube, then maybe I'm just missing those two parts. The thrust cover is listed here for XV1600 up to 2003. Maybe I just need to order those parts. USAFRETIRED wrote:
For some reason, I am thinking the difference was the end caps. Think I had a newer swingarm and had to use the old end caps. Might be wrong as it has been some time ago.

The tube width is 11 3/8in wide. The shaft is 14 1/4in.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the measurements. That's the same as mine. I think this chrome arm is from a 1600. Over lunch I called the local Yamaha shop and described it to one of their guys. He says he remembers doing maintenance (bearings) on a R* thinks it did have shims. But he wasn't sure of the year. I went ahead an ordered the thrust covers and shims for $30. It'll take a few days to arrive but I'm out of town most of next week. So we'll see next weekend. Fingers crossed.signal20k9 wrote:

Yeah. I figured you were looking at the axle at 14 1/4in. 11 3/8" is the pivot tube.signal20k9 wrote:

Re:Swingarm pivot tube width?? 1 Year ago

So I finally found a good site for schematics at Yamaha Sports Plaza. Going through the different years I found out that the Rear Arm Suspension as it's called, had shims inside the thrust covers through 2003. Staring in '04 with the 1700 no more shims. So this chrome arm is for a 1600. I got the part numbers for the shims and thrust covers from that site and ordered them from my local shop. I was reading the article on How to Install Highway Hank swingarm covers and decided to replace the axle adjuster thing, so I also ordered a "puller, chain" so that both will be the "push to the rear" kind. While I'm into all of this I've been lubing everything, and cleaning things that I normally can't get to. I also found out the rear brake pads were almost gone. So I'm replacing those too. Gonna be like a new bike when I'm done.

So almost two weeks later and no parts from the dealer. Something went wrong with the order. It was placed but they don't know where it went. I've been calling them every day this week. The parts manager is going to get them ordered again today and not charge me for the parts. Frustrating to wait but at least he's making it right.

Maybe someone already knows this or can take a measurement off their bike for me. I have an '05. Last year I bought a chrome swingarm on eBay. The seller said it was from a 1700, but when I swap it out the pivot shaft insert is too long. Turns out the swingarm's pivot tube is 1/4" narrower than the original. That means it will have 1/4" play in the frame. Not good. Also the end caps won't fit tight since the shaft is too long. I'm wondering if a 1600 swingarm is narrower than the 1700. I might be able to have the shaft insert machined to fit so the end caps fit tight. Then use two 1/8" spacers to center. Everything else measures right. Axle space, belt guard, caliper mounts. Any ideas???
I think my 1600 has to 3mm shim on each side of my tube for, I think, for a thrust washer/surface.
I wasn't paying to close... but I can see it when I look really hard. Since the shaft itself it the same length as the '05 one you have...
Also, if you look at the '05 parts fiche for the rear arm suspension and '01 parts fiche for the rear arm suspension... you can see it appears they reove the shim style thrust washer and converted to a cap style thrust bearing.
I'm thinking the swingarm is from a 1600...
