+! on the cost of paint nowadays.... quality paint has gone thru the roof since the 80's. That being said, base / clear is A LOT easier to paint and is very forgiving if you make a mistake. Check around, prep work is everything. I have been painting my own cars and bikes for 20 years. It pays to talk to the painter in person before you decide.

I'm in the wrong business, I use to paint cars in the late seventy's and eighty's.... $300-$400 a car.... including all the body work and prep. And I was making a fortune.

Time to get back in the business. Someone I know is charging at least $6k to do a full job on a BMW, the correct way, sills, pulling all doors etc, rubber. The shop wanted 8-9. Sounds great until you think about the kind of people with that kind of cash who might want to fully paint a used luxury car.

There are a couple quality shops close to me that charge the same $600 for tank, fenders, and side covers! Cars are another animal, my wifes 2005 Mazda6 was quoted at $4k.

I just had my bike painted 2 months ago... searched for a couple of shops and found one who had a great website with lots of pics of finished jobs, customer testimonials, etc. Went down to his shop and the guy must have had 50 sets of tins in various stages of prep and paint... the guy was very good and had a lot of business...

He charged $500 for prep, prime, paint and clearcoat plus materials... since the cost of the paint you choose could vary widely. My paint wound up being around $280 for the special grey metallic pearl flake I choose.. Total cost was $780 + tax.... worth every penny

In another lifetime, I used to hang out on the Honda VTX message boards.

This guy did a bunch of mods and paint work for folks and had a good reputation among the VTX riders.

He is local to our area although I have never met him.

Your idea, my idea and the next persons idea of what is quality in a paint job are three different opinions. I offer this information only as another source to add to anyone looking for motorcycle paint work.

I've been using a local body shop for years. Last one he did was my chop in solid black and had a lot of prep. Charged me $850.00 for a tank, two fenders, side covers and handlebars. All were raw metal.

I saw an ad on craigslist, he quoted me $1200, for a one-color paint job. Looks like he does nice work:
