Handlebar specs 7 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Looking for a little technical help here.........

I removed the Ape Hangers off my bike and had the Yamaha Drag Bar & risers installed. These are the same bars & risers I had on my Warrior and loved them. I know they are totally different bikes but I 'hoped' the riding position achieved would be very close.........unfortunately it is not. The bars are much closer to me on the RoadStar. I may adjust to it and find that I like it.......I may not. Time will tell.

In the mean time, should I decide a change is needed - is there a more mathematical way to determine where the bars will fall relative to the seating position? I was going to try to scale side photos of each bike; use theirs specs to try to find the relative distances from the top of the triple tree to the seating position and work from there. But if there is already an easier way please let me know....I don't want to re-invent the wheel. (Plus, unless I make the photos VERY large it would be quite easy to be off an inch or two and that would be huge in relative terms)

At least on viewing with the naked eye, the top of the triple clamp on the RS "seems" quite a bit higher than the Warrior. Anyway, hopefully someone can point me in a better direction here.

Thanks

I accidentally found a pretty good way to compare them.

I was printing full page 'Landscaped format' photos of each bike I got of the Yamaha website to do some scaling and when I pulled them out of the printer one atop the other........I thought......hmmmmmm???

Held them up to the light and they lined up pretty well. I played with the sizing until I got the wheelbase of the RS 'slightly' longer than the Warrior and now I've got a pretty good indicator of their relative differences. Seating positions line up pretty well and the R*'s triple tree is significantly higher and tighter (just as my body was telling me - but seeing is believing)

Cool

You've already figured it out but ....

...... (you'll need an extra pair of hands)....

Sit on the bike and hold the bars in your hand in the position you want them to be. Measure the rise and run, and order risers that match.

Yeah, but that's kind of difficult to do. PLUS, I rode the Warrior for 3+ years. I know exactly from THAT experience where I would like the bars.....1 - 2"'s closer than they were on the Warrior; THAT position was just a TAD stretched out. But I always felt I had great control and leverage on the Warrior. I wanted to tweak that with the Warrior, but I never got around to it.

It seems if I can translate the riding position on THAT bike to the R*......the results will be more objective than subjective. Sitting statically on the bike even if I could hold them perfectly still - for me - would be like sitting on a bike in the showroom vs. riding down the road. I might "think" that's where I'd like 'em......but 10 minutes into a ride, I'd realize that wasn't quite right. I think all I have to do is scale the difference in the top of the triple tree position as - luckily - seat height is within 0.2". The current riser and bar are identical so I should know where my sweet spot is and then it's a matter of finding the riser to get me there. RIGHT?!?

You as I'm typing this I realize SOMEONE should come up with a fully adjustable riser fitting 'JIG'......something you could put on the bike and allow the owner to ride - then come back and tweak (loosen, slide up/down & in/out & tighten). Then REPEAT until the rider says THAT'S IT! Then slap on the risers that match that position. It would be too much trouble for a typical shop......but at a bike week - I think you'd sell the sh*t out of your risers & bars plus a charge for the "fitting".

It kills me that unlike cars or even golf clubs.....with bikes we are generally forced to BUY before you TRY. That's why I always try to ride a bike or two during Americade, etc......even when I'm not in the market. I just file away the likes/dislikes for a time when I AM going to buy.

Ok.....I've come up with the Roadstar Triple Tree position being (approx):

3.5" higher
3.2" closer than the Warrior.

Let's go to the Yami catalog and find the specs on my current risers.........Given WITH THE FLAT BAR! Man, they are not making this easy!

6.5" Rise, 10.25 total pullback.

Out to the Garage.........

Looks like the riser accounts for 2.5 to 3" of the pullback with the flatbar adding the rest. So , ideally, I think I'm looking for 3" rise, & 1.5" pullback. The Yami short billet risers are close at 2.25 & 1.25

ANYBODY using this combo????? Yami flatbar and short billet riser??

Go to a Harley Dealer they have that jig so you can match the seat and handlebars to your liking BEFORE purchasing. Just spend $25,000 on a subpar bike compared to the R* and you get those perks
I put my R* on a jack stand took the handlebars off and put my hands where they felt good and had my wife measure then bought the closest to that measurement.

I'm with you Steven
I have been riding long enough that I can sit on any bike and feel where my back should be sitting in an upright position and hold my hands in a postion that I know will feel good and then
measure from there. That's how I ended up with beach bars. Rise, width, and pull back fit my short body just right. I rode a friends Road King this last monday for about 38 miles to take his bike & him home (he got drunk and need a driver).Anyway I was so uncomfortable on that road king. Sat to high, bars made me lean forward, elbows were pulled in. I didn't tell my friend but I hated riding his bike compared to my R*.

It's funny how perceptions change. The weather FINALLY broke into spring here and I've been riding 4 days in a row. I really grown to like the setup I've got now. It feels great! Glad I was patient and didn't rush to change it.

(of course, I've also found that that I like a bit MORE than the 15 lbs of pressure in both tires that the bike was delivered with. 25MPG on the first tankful will make even a procrastinator like me investigate the obvious. Doh!)
