Tire Removal? 7 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I just ordered the softtail rear fender and the hugger fender from summax. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if I would need to remove to rear tire to mark the holes for mounting the fender? As of yet my bike is not lowered, still at stock height. Is there anything that I need to watch for when mounting the fender that would prevent me from lowering it in the future. I just don't want to mount it at the wrong angle that may prevent lowering. Thanks in advance.

Michael

I would take pics and show you step by step but my camera is broken.

You just loosen the axle, move the tire forward to relieve tension on the belt and slip the belt off the pulley. Then pull out the axle and out comes the tire.

As far as installing a custom fender (like this one I built from scratch)

it is best to do it with the tire on. Remove the fender and the suspension from the rear and set the bike on the grond so the bike is in it's lowest position, and the tire in it's highest, then you can mock up how you want your fender. By doing this you can run like a rigid if you wanted and never hit the fender with the tire.

Ok. I was thinking it was best to do it with the tire still on. I think I want to lower it 2" or so. Really just low enough that the new fender doesnt look like it is stuck up in mid air but still high enough that when carrying a passenger it doesn't scrape. Guess I will figure it out though.

Well if you mount it to the swingarm you can lay it almost on the tire.

You can remove the A pillars and fab a support to the seat area.

You can use the existing A pillar and make an extension to lower the fender.

You can use the existing A pillar and lower the bike.

Many possibilities ... you need to decide as it will lock you in on future mods.

Hey easyrider. what do the fenders look like you ordered? Do they have a website? The fenders on my roadie are the only thing i dont like. Been thinking of chopping my back one and going with a sidemount tail light, i just dont have the nerve to butcher a new fender yet. thanks roadhog

When you lower your bike get the Baron's Custom 930lbs spring. GET IT! It's amazing and you'll hate your self for not getting it. Also may I recommend the adjustable lowering kit from BMS customs. It's a solid kit and it works great!
http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/detail.cfm?model_ID=37&Category_ID=14&manufacturer_ID=167&product_ID=6889 is the cheapest place to get the spring.
http://www.bmschoppers.com/eshopprod_cat_1479-11370_product_130761.BMS_REAR_ADJUSTABLE_LOWERING_K.htm is the lowering kit. I looked into making my own but I couldn't match the quality of components for the price. Definitely worth it.
