OK here we go i just installed my speedstar air cleaner and rejetted carb. installed 170 main needle on 4th from blunt end stock pilot pms out 3 turns!! bike idles great with awsome wot but off idle and slower speed cruise bad surging and popping. Do i need to install 50 pilot like speedstar recomends or do i need to adjust needle hight? by the way i run hardchrome 3 inch straits with homemade baffles. Thanks in advance for your help!!

Make sure your float level is good first. Leave the 170 in. Set the needle in the 5th groove from the blunt end, set the PMS from 2 1/2 to 3 turns. Leave the stock pilot. Do the WOT. If the main checks out then move the clip to the 4th groove and tweak the needle and PMS from there. To set the PMS set your idle to around 900 RPMs. Slowly turn the PMS in until the motor stumbles. Then counting the turns slowly turn it back out until the motor stumbles again. Half way in between is pretty good. So if you went out 3 turns you go back in 1 1/2. You could also try the clip in the 3rd with 2 washers under the spacer. And you can try the 167.5 main also.

musky ,kit did not come with 167.5 closest is 165 main. The set up you mentioned 170 main 5th groove stock pilot and 3 turns on pms was where i started and did wot then changed needle to the 4th groove have turned pms in and out as far as 1.5 turns to as much as 4 turns but still have the popping and surging as soon as i open throttle it picks up and runs great untill i back off !! thanks for the help.PS wot is great and so is idle but no matter where i set pms the surge and bacfireing is still there!

Float level? Check for air leaks on the intake and exhaust.

Float level is good and no leaks. Did not do this untill i rejetted and installed air cleaner. have not changed anything except main jet needle and air cleaner. stock main was 182.5 with stock 1 groove needle replaced with 170 main and needle now on 4th groove. this is not a slight surge and rich decel popping it is a wont hardly run bucking and popping like it is very lean at slower speeds.you have to feather throttle to get it to pick up and when it does it has lots of power untill you back off again. there is no black smoke on hard throttle sitting still.Thanks again!

So you checked the float level after you changed the main jet and checked for air leaks after you put the new filter on? Are you sure you have everything in the right place on the needle? Is the plug that holds the needle in place all the way down? The diaphram is seated in the groove all the way around and no leaks there? If you a new problem shows up after you change something you need to double check everything you did.

Hi musky got back into the R a little while ago got it running good. but a question i checked the float level and checked for vac leaks again it checked good so i put the needle back on the 5th groove from the blunt end left the 170 main and stock pilot played with the pms for awhile 5 test rides later had bike running good with pms at 1.5 turns out!! my question is if its running good at this setting why was it so bad with needle at 4th and pms at 3 turns out? am i not correct that raising the needle or turning pms out both richen the mixture and vice & versa? any suggestion will be appreciated.PS. it still seems to be just a touch rich!! Thanks

Did you change one thing at a time or change multiple things at once? Did you set the PMS by the stumble method I described?
