LED angle bulbs in turn signals 3 Years ago
I added the stop, turn, run plug and play on my 05 R* and have a question regarding running LED bulbs. I am not happy with the brightness of the regular red bulbs. JP Cycles has an angle red LED bulb that will fit in my housing but there is a disclaimer at the bottom that states it could lead to melting of the platic houseing with prolonged use. Anyone had negative experience with these bulbs or the high performance (expensive) coated bulbs creeating to much heat and causing damage.

I apoligize if this info is here somewhere but I have done a search and was unsuccesful finding my answer.

That's an odd disclaimer. My friend put a slanted tail light lens on his H-D and had to put an LED bulb in so the lens wouldn't melt. To my knowledge LEDs put out way less heat than a filament bulb. The problem with LEDs is if they are not in the correct housing they look like a "spot" of red, the light doesn't disperse very well. I went with red bulbs to keep the clear lenses. Works real well on my bike.

The best LED bulbs to use are Custom Dynamics GEN200-R-? for the rear and GEN200-A-? for the front. The A or R means amber or red, the ? is the identifier for the type base. They list for $52 per pair and are garanteed for life. They are brighter than normall bulbs, do not produce a lot of heat and are a reduced load on the electrical system. I can get them for you for $40 per pair plus shipping.

This is the note from the JP Cycle website. It seems to be on teh bottom of many of their bulb selections. Might just be a CMA statement.

Tech Tip
When upgrading your lamp to a high intensity bulb, it may be necessary to use a metallic bulb housing. Temperatures could get hot enough to melt plastic lens shells. It is also a good idea to evaluate your charging system to make sure it will accommodate the extra amperage draw and that the headlight wire and plug are in good condition.

LED bulbs do not have as high a candlepower rating as incandescents and are very directional...poorly visible off centre line...they do save power...so your hydro bill is less

I have the Custom Dynamics GAN200-A-1157 in my front signals and they are right up in the lens. There is nothing directional about them; I just went out and checked; the bike is in front of my shop in broad daylight I can see them from about 30 degrees behind the perpendicular! And that is the running lights, the signals are brighter. The bulbs pictured a couple of posts ago are back in the lolipop and are partially hidden which makes them directional. There is no heat problem with LEDs! The regular incandescent bulbs get hot; the super bright and iridium coated and halogen bulbs are even hotter!
