Help w/ sissy bar install 4 Months ago
I bought used a sissy bar amd mounting brackets for my 2007 roadstar and needed some install help as I am w/ out instructions. I got the backrest sidearms and the backrest as shown here: http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/products/modelscitemdetail/5/18/91/424/2008/1/221/0/1/detail.aspx
For 150.00 I also got the mustang backrest pad with the deal. I just got home from work and went to try to put these things on and realized I did not get any screws to mount with(fine w/ me for the price) and I have no clue how to mount this thing.... Do the brackets go over top of the existing chrome strips on each side of the rear fender with longer screws or do I remove these chrome strips and mount directly to the metal? I hope what I bought will fit my bike, here is a picture of the bike the hardware came from. http://www.streetfireleds.com/contact.html
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't installed one, however first off i would take off the rear fender its only 3 bolts under the seat and one electrical connector, you do have to remover the factory eyebrows to install the sissy bar mounts. since you don't have the screws that come with the sissy bar mounts you have to make sure that the bolts you are using don't stick out to far our you might damage the tire. you may need to cut them down.

Ok, I ditch the eyebrows. I took one side off but the holes in the fender are too small for the inserts(where the two bolts go in to make a flush fitting) of the side bracket. My bike is an 07 and I think his is an 05, am I dealing w/ a wrong part/year issue or do I drill? I will also contact the seller for more information.

that I'm not sure of. may be a little later on in the day but others members will give more input. i don't think the holes should be different but you never know the fenders did change a few years ago.

The bracket doesn't sit flush, you'll have a 1/8 inch or so gap the length of the brackets. The 05 and 07 parts are interchangeable.

No drilling required...the little raised spacers on the inside of the backrest rest against the fender, but the whole length of the sidearm doesn't. The worst you would have to do is go to the hardware store and get some longer bolts...can't remember whether or not the ones that come out of the eyebrows are too short to use in the backrest sidearms, but I think they are. I think they're M8x120 bolts you'll need, but take one that you remove to the store just to be sure.

Good luck!

If you bought them used from someone with an 05, it's possible HE bought the wrong ones and drilled to make them fit?? If you have the right ones, the holes should line up, don't drill!

Hi,
I just did some bag work on my 04. The bolts I got at ace hardware, I bet home depot or lowes has them also. The size was metric 8 x 1.25 the length depends on how thick your stuff is. Also get some Blue loctite to keep them from falling out.

thank god for ace if it is the correct one you shouldn,t have to drill anything or remove the fender. but do check and make sure the bolts aren't sticking into the tires.

Thanks folks, I have a full understanding of the brackets and how they mount on now. I guess what really got me confused was having the 1/8 inch gap between the fender and the bracket. I assumed it would mount flush as the eyebrow did. Can't thank you all enough.
Case closed.
